After arriving in Toledo and getting settled in at the park inn, it was time for dinner so we met in the hotel lobby and met up with the other people on the tour, as well as the guides. Then we piled into the limo and headed to dinner at Tony Packo’s. I had no idea what Hungarian food was, but when I opened the menu and saw all kinds of chili, hot dogs and hearty soups, I knew I wouldn’t have any trouble finding something great to eat. I decided on the chicken sandwich combo which came with a soup (I ordered veggie) and another side (I got fries). Ryan went with a hot dog and chili cheese fries. Before our main entrees went out, we got some fried pickles for an appetizer. I had heard of fried pickles before but had never tried them. They were spicier than I expected, but really good. The veggie soup was amazing, I had to stop myself from eating the whole bowl because I knew if I did I wouldn’t have room to eat my main meal. When my sandwich and fries came, I was surprised at how generous the portions were – I wasn’t even able to finish half the sandwich. It was amazing though! The amount of cheese and bacon added is super generous and tastes amazing. Ryan didn’t finish all of his food either, even though he said it was really good. At tony packos’ you can definitely split a main entree with a date, or else order separate meals and take half home to eat for lunch the next day. I love having left over restaurant food though, so nothing wrong with that! We went to tony packo’s at dinner, but if you go at lunch time they have a “lunch room” style where you walk in and yell out your order to the cooks. Such a neat touch of personality. There’s also special touches all over the building, the main one being the hot dog buns! Tony Packo’s is somewhat famous, and lots of famous people have stopped in to eat there and it has become a tradition for famous people to sign fake hot dog buns and have them hung on the walls inside the restaurant. We saw all kinds of signatures, including everyone from Barack Obama to Mr T. Tony Packo’s is definitely a unique restaurant with a ton of personality. There were tons of people there eating including lots of families. It’s definitely a laid back place where you can feel comfortable bringing your toddlers without having to panic if they melt down. The food was amazing and there’s no way we’ll be driving through Toledo ever again without stopping at

Which restaurant did you visit? The one on Front Street (near downtown), if it’s still there???, is the original. We used to go there when I was a kid to eat and listen to the Cakewalkin’ Jazz Band! (And, yeah, those pickles will knock your socks off!)

We will definitely look for Tony Packo’s if/when we go to/through Toledo. It sounds like just the type of place we would enjoy.

I’ve never tried Hungarian food, but this sounds great.

Wow…very cool! I used to live in Ohio (in Akron) and never visited Toledo. I sure do miss fried pickles, though. In the Philly area, I’ve yet to find a place that makes them. I’ve stopped asking, because people give me the weirdest looks when I do. 🙁
Tony Packo’s is amazing. I live in Toledo and I can never get sick of it. I even worked there for 3 years when I was younger and couldn’t get enough of it even helped me gain that freshman 15+! LOL! The Chicken Paprikash is to die for!
