I held off from jumping on the ereader train for a while. I thought that reading from a screen just wouldn’t be the same as holding a book. Also, I didn’t want the hassle of having to charge a device. I recently gave in and decided to give an ereader a try – specifically the nook simple touch and I’ve been surprised at how much I love it!
The Nook Simple Touch is a basic ereader that doesn’t have internet access but instead is “just” an ereader. It has a 6″ touchscreen and weighs less than 8 ounces, making it lighter than a paperback! I had seen some free ebooks offered online a few months back and I had downloaded them onto my smartphone and tried reading the ebook in a waiting room a while back. After reading for a while, my eyes felt weird when I looked away because of the brightness of the screen. The nook simple touch doesn’t have that “bright white” appearance at all and even after reading for hours it doesn’t mess with your eyes to look away from the screen. The lettering on the screen looks incredibly similar to a real book – the background being an off white and the lettering almost looking ink-like. It’s pretty cool. The nook simple touch works well even while being used outside under direct sunlight, it’s easy to read off from unlike many other devices.
There is enough storage room for over 1000 books! It has 2gb of internal memory and you can purchase a microSD card for your device which can add up to 32gb of extra storage. The battery life is incredibly impressive. I read 3 books, each of them being over 300 pages in length and still had more than 50% battery. When the battery finally did get low, I plugged it in to charge while reading a book and the battery life increased even though I was currently reading from it. In the month or so that we have had the nook we’ve only had to charge it 3 or 4 times. The staples website says that with wifi turned off the battery life can last for up to two months, or up to three weeks with the wifi turned on. Super impressive!
The only feature I would like to see improved is the touchscreen. A couple of times we try to unlock the screen (by swiping the bottom from left to right) and it doesn’t register our touch despite trying a few times in a row. It seems to ‘snap out of it’ after 30 seconds or so. Sometimes I’ll tap the screen once to turn one page and it jumps ahead two pages. Also sometimes our ‘turn the page’ tap brings up a notification asking us to bookmark the page.
Since getting the nook, Ryan and I have both found ourselves reading a lot more than we had previously. I wasn’t surprised that we both dove into books soon after it arrived but even 4 weeks later we have still both been reading regularly which we weren’t in the habit of doing.
As a deal seeker, I like how ebooks are sometimes offered free on amazon and other sites. I also like how ebooks tend to be cheaper than physical copies of books so overtime, purchasing an ereader can actually save you money if you’re a regular reader.
I have a bad habit of throwing the nook in my purse if we head out to a doctors appointment or something where I know we’ll be waiting around bored. I need to get a cover for the nook because I’m afraid that the screen will get scratched by a pen or some other random thing floating around in my purse. Now through October 6th, if you purchase the nook simple touch from staples you get a free screen protector.
Buy it: You can purchase the nook simple touch from Staples for $99.00.
Connect: You can connect with staples on Facebook and Twitter.

You can’t read Kindle books on the nook (or Nook books on Kindle). But Nook does offer many free books also. Many libraries also have where you can borrow eBooks for 2 weeks. Nook allows you to read ePub and PDF books on it.
I have the Nook simple w/Glowlight and also a couple of Kindles. I read every day and even my father has started loving reading on them.

The price on this really can’t be beat! It would be a great Christmas present.

We have a Nook Color that we love (that we won!). Even though I love sitting and reading a book where I can flip the pages, these eReaders are really handy. It takes up a lot less room than a stack of books, it’s easily portable, and they can keep the kiddos entertained. At $99 I think it would be a great Christmas present, especially for college kids headed back for spring semester.

I have the Nook “First Edition” and love it! =)
Enjoy your new e-reader! -
I LOVE my Nook Tablet. I got it for Christmas last year, and it’s one of my favorite possessions!
Thanks for the review! My original Kindle gave up the ghost a few weeks ago and I’m trying to decide if I want a new one, a nook or something else… can you read the free kindle books on your nook?
