I find older children and teenagers some of the hardest people to purchase for. Once they’ve left the toy stage, it can be difficult to come up with ideas that they’ll like and use. Most teenagers have really expensive, and really specific items listed on their wish list. I remember being a teenager and getting gifts from extended family members that I appreciated because I knew they were trying, but they just weren’t things I would up using at all. I was always happy to get board or card games though because I liked to play games with my friends when we’d spend the night at each other’s houses. I also started babysitting around age 12 and enjoy bringing games with me to entertain the kids with.
I’ve found that a lot of new games released are really similar variations of basically the same game with just one tiny twist. That certainly isn’t the case with Morphology and Morphology Junior.
Morphology comes with random little items like a string, popsicle stick, beads, cubes, etc. When it’s your turn, you draw a card that has a word on it. Your job is to use the included items to assemble something that will make the other players guess your word. There is a timer included so the other players need to guess before it runs out. There is also a board included and each time that you correctly guess someone else’s word, you get to move forward a space. The first person to get their pawn to the end of the board wins. It’s suggested for ages 13+. This version of the game would be a great gift for teens or adults.
Morphology Junior is similar to Morphology with a few changes that make the game easier for younger players. For example, this game comes with two sets of cards, an easy set and a hard set that lets you adjust the games difficultly level. Also, instead of having each person have to build the words when drawn, there is one person who builds and that person changes back and forth between each group. This allows the game to be more fair seems how the builder for each team is equally “good” at building. There is also a slight variation in what items are included in the game such as wooden blocks instead of popsicle sticks. There are also hints which can be read or not, which further dictates the difficulty of the game. Morphology Junior is recommended for ages 8+, making it a great gift for tweens.
