Most kids that I know love to dance. I have an 18 month old nephew who loves all things musical, including dancing. He’s young enough that he isn’t at all self conscious about his dancing so he’ll dance away wherever he happens to be standing. I think his love of dance is very common and natural, but many kids grow self conscious with age when they realize that most people don’t dance while getting groceries. When I worked in a preschool of 3 and 4 year olds, we did tons of singing, dancing and hand movements to go along with the songs and stories we read. At the beginning of the school year, there would be a handful of children who would stand frozen while we danced, but within just a few weeks all of the kids relaxed and would enjoy dancing and singing everyday. At home, kids tend to be less self conscious and really let go when they feel the urge to dance. It’s great to encourage kids to dance though, as dance is a great, fun way for kids to gain exercise. I think the best way to exercise is when you don’t realize you’re working because you’re busy having fun.

The Curious George Dance Contest is a contest that was started because Curious George is looking to feature a child dancing to the curious george theme song, on a Curious George dvd. Whoever wins may also win a visit from Curious George! The videos will be graded on enthusiasm, creativity and originality. There will be a panel of judges who select 10 finalists. The contest ends April 10th. So if you have a little one, turn on the Curious George theme song and record them dancing to the song for your chance to win. To read the rules and learn more about the contest, check out the Curious George dance contest site.

There is also a Curious George twitter party coming up tomorrow. The hashtag is #CuriousGeorgeMoms. The party starts march 21st at 1pm EST. If you’d like to RSVP you can do so here. Prizes include two 50.00 gift cards to michael’s and a kindle fire.

So true – Children grow self conscious with age. It takes longer to get them in the groove as they get older. But so fun when they learn to let go and have fun!
