I recently had the opportunity to try out three types of chicken sausage from al fresco. I’m from a family where every meal includes some kind of meat, which of course isn’t a good balance especially when eating a lot of red meat. Al Fresco Chicken Sausage contains 70% less fat than pork sausage and is free of nitrites, nitrates, preservatives and artificial flavor. This means a much healthier way to feed your meat addiction, which I love.

My plan was to cook these up without letting Ryan know that they were chicken sausage, to see if he could tell the difference. I wasn’t home when the package arrived and he opened it and read the labels, so he wound up knowing anyway.

We tried out the fully cooked breakfast sausage in Country Style. The package contains 7 links. These can be microwaved or fried, and we opted to fry them. These are well seasoned which makes them much more interesting than your typical precooked pork sausage. The seasoning reminded me of restaurant style breakfast links that I’ve had before, and I dipped these in syrup and they were great. While the coloring was slightly different (lighter) than the coloring of pork sausage, the flavor was great. I have seen these at the local grocery store for 3.00 a package after coupon, which is really close to what we were used to paying for precooked pork sausage, so we’ll definitely be buying these when we find them on a good sale or coupon deal.

We also were sent al fresco precooked dinner sausage in roasted pepper and asiago to check out.We occasionally buy bratwurst, but otherwise don’t usually buy dinner sausage so I cooked these up in a frying pan like I would a regular brat except these took less time to cook seems how they are precooked. I tried one and while it tasted good, it was very juicy. Ryan and I like all meat very well done, to where most people would consider it overdone. I’m very sensitive to meat being juicy, so I decided to cut the sausages into 1/2 inch strips and fry them on each side to try and get them more done, and less juicy. While they did get less juicy, I wasn’t able to get them dry enough for my preference. However, I am quite sensitive to juicy meat so it’s quite possible that most other people would have thought they were fine.

The last item that we were able to check out was the fresh chicken burgers in hot italian. I don’t eat hamburgers so I didn’t try tasting these. They come in thin pattys, and there is four to a package. Given that Ryan likes well done meat, we always make our burgers very thin so that they are more well done. Therefore, we appreciated that these come in pretty thin patties. I still used a spatula to flatten them slightly but they are pretty thin to start with. So we really liked how thin these were. This allowed us to cook them thoroughly and we were able to get them “dry” enough. We didn’t have hamburger buns so instead we made a sandwich out of toast but Ryan enjoyed them. He liked the seasoning which makes them more interesting than your typical burger, almost more like a breakfast patty. He said that it was hot but not burn-your-mouth type hot. They are larger than burgers we would usually make and they don’t shrink much when cooking due to the lower fat content. These get a thumbs up from Ryan.
