Over the last few years I have been reaping the benefits of a friend’s garden harvest. He loves to grow veg, but doesn’t really like to eat it. So I have been freezing veg for winter and also eating more than my fair share of tomatoes and peppers during the summer. This year, however, he has opted to expand the garden by about 3 times as much and asked if I would like to have my own section of garden that I plan, plant and maintain all for myself. I accepted and then fretted over whether to start from seed or buy plantings. I have historically thought of myself as one with a “black thumb” that kills every seed I meet, so I felt a bit of a challenge when Seeds of Change offered to send me a Seeds of Change Kids Garden Starter Kit, but I am always up for experimentation with my kids and it seemed like a great experience we could have together in watching the seeds grow into seedlings that we could plant in our new garden.
The Kids Garden Starter Kits come in 3 different varieties: Carrots & Lettuce, Pumpkin, and Watermelon. I was sent the kit containing seeds for Carrots & Lettuce. The set comes with organic seeds, 2 biodegradable pots for planting, organic planting mix, a tray to set your biodegradable pots in, and a guide pamphlet to help you upon your way. My daughter (with some supervision) immediately set to work.

It was a lot of fun planting together. Following the instructions laid out in the pamphlet were quite straightforward and our original planting of the 2 types of seeds ended up looking really nice. I had quite a lot of hope in them since Seeds of Change has a great reputation around my friends who choose to grow organic.

I had great hopes for our seeds, but they met an early demise due to my kitty. Apparently she likes to eat young seedlings and these ones especially seemed to catch her eye. I plan to try and replant with my daughter in a room closed off from the Mooch Kitty.
The fact that I have no plants today is no reflection upon Seeds of Change in any way at all, nor their Kids Garden Starter Kits. They have sent me enough seeds that I will certainly be able to start more seeds to transplant in my garden. The product only costs $5.99 and is a brilliant way to teach your children where their foods come from. My kids also seem to enjoy food that they have a hand in producing in some manner. You don’t need to have a large garden to transplant these either. You can transplant them to a windowsill container as well and they should do fine, though the pots are biodegradable and enrich your soil in your garden if transplanted there. It is a bit late in the season, but there is still time to plant carrots and lettuce as they can be replanted every few weeks to keep a steady supply over the summer.
