Betty Lukens is an online website that makes and sells felt boards which are boards with felt fabric on them that are designed to look like different scenes – a farm, a campsite, the safari, etc. They also come with pieces of felt that are shaped like animals, people, clothing, etc. This lets children take the basic scene that is created by the felt board and arrange the felt pieces using their imagination. They can be used to tell stories, play pretend and more. Because they are made of felt, they are incredibly quiet so they make great toys for quiet time or using in a car on a road trip, etc.
We were sent two sets from the Animals and Nature category on the Betty Lukens website. Fun of The Farm is a farm scene with children, cows, a lamb, two horses, a tractor, ducks, pigs, chickens, etc. Forest Camping Adventure is a camping scene with fox, wolf, deer, ducks, dog, raccoon, rabbit, beaver, tent, etc. Both sets come in a clear plastic carrying case that helps to make them portable and easy to clean up and store. Both sets say they are for ages 3+ but my 2 year old nephew Drew really enjoys some felt letter and animal cut outs that we have so I knew he would like these, I just have to watch him closely when he plays with them. At his age they are educational because as we pretend play with these scenes he hears me referring to some of the animals that he doesn’t currently know and can learn their names. It also encourages him to come up with pretend play scenes. He thinks it is funny when I take the tractor from the farm set and put it into the camping scene and ask “Do tractors go camping?” or other out of place objects like that and he laughs and says nooo. Yet other pieces such as the rabbit from the camping set can easily fit onto the farm set so it’s a bit of “does it belong” type practice for him as well. For older children they can be educational by encouraging children to come up with stories about the characters or animals included which is a literacy skill. Yet, they are fun and children don’t realize they are learning which is the best way to learn in my opinion.
Betty Lukens has several other animal based felt board sets in the early learning category as well as lots of other items. There is a large section if christian based sets, food sets, color and number sets and more. We had some odd whether this fall where it would be warm one day and quite cold the next so I noticed that Drew would be confused about why we were wearing coats one day but then when we got ready to go outside the next day and he grabbed his coat we said no you’d be too hot. I think the Panda Bear Dress Up set would be a great way to help teach children the different seasons and the different clothing that we wear based on the weather. There are tons of great educational sets at Betty Lukens so be sure to check them out.
