There is a new series of children’s books that I think are just superb!  I have only read the first one, but I think that the author Erika Kimble has come up with a great idea!  Erika has her Masters Degree in Nursing and has created this great series titled Malcolm Finney Medical Detectives.  The first book in the collection is The Case of Itch and Rash.  Erika wanted to create a series of books that could help explain certain medical issues to children, but in a fun way.  Doctors don’t always have to time to explain things in terms that children can understand and parents don’t always know how to explain them in simple enough terms.  Erika has taken care of that problem by introducing the world to Malcolm Finney!

Malcolm Finney Medical Detective: The Case of Itch and Rash is the first book of the series and focuses on eczema or atopic dermatitis.  Malcolm is meeting his neighbor for the very first time and rescuing her from a storm of bees.  As he is helping his new friend out he notices an unusual rash on her skin.  He asked his new friend to describe everything she could about her rash and Malcolm started his detective work.  Malcolm and his friend went on a few adventures and soon they figure out that Carlita had eczema.  The path they take to get to their conclusion will not only teach your child the different layers of skin, but it will teach them what eczema really is and the best steps to take in order to take care of their skin.

This is a great book for a child of any age, however if you have a preschooler it would be great to sit down and look at the pictures and talk a little bit about what is going on.  My son is 4 and he loves to look at the book and he will ask a lot of questions.  He does suffer from a tad bit of eczema on his upper arms so The Case of Itch and Rash has been very beneficial to him.  Little C also likes science related material so the Malcolm Finney Medical Detective Series will be great for him.  This is a series that he can grow up with!
