My New Year’s resolution this year is to read more books. And so far, I’ve been doing pretty well. One of the books I’ve read this year is a book written by my own mother, first-time author Helen O’Keefe Petty, Beginning At The End Of The Road. As a disclaimer, this book was written by my mother, so my opinions may be a bit biased, but I enjoyed her book and want to share it with you.
The book is a fiction drama which follows four parents, each vastly different, with their own strengths and weaknesses. There’s Jo, a mother and wife who seems to have it all together. She’s pretty, smart, and does just about everything. There’s Mark, a businessman first, father second. Maggie, a divorced mother recently overcome by agoraphobia, which keeps her trapped in her home. And David, a divorced father who suffers from severe alcoholism. The book follows these characters, leading up to a particular event in each of their lives which ends up bringing them all together. This event changes their lives forever.
One thing I liked about the book is how relatable the characters are. You can relate with them, or certainly know people like them. I’ve definitely known “Jo’s” and “Mark’s” in my life. I am not a parent myself, but I think any parent would be able to relate to the characters even more, particularly their struggles with their children.
Without giving too much away, this book delves into the spiritual, and explores how events can change your life forever, and offers some insight and wisdom through the characters. While this is not typically the kind of genre I normally enjoy, I did find this book to be quite interesting, and I think it’s worth a read, even if it’s not your choice genre either.
