My nephew Luke just turned 7 about two weeks ago. He’s a pretty busy kid, and like most boys, he likes physical play. He watches some anime cartoons, and when I saw Tosy Toop Spinning Tops, their logo and overall package design reminded me of some of the anime shows that he watched. When I realized that the tops are designed so that you can battle with a friend, I knew these would be something of interest for him. I decided to give them to him for his birthday, but Ryan & I checked them out for a few minutes before we gave them to him.

The set comes with a thin plastic battle zone that keeps the tops spinning in a small area so that they are more likely to slide into one another. I was a bit surprised at how thin the battle area is, I don’t think it will last my active nephew very long before bending or breaking. I thought this might be a big let down, but when I gave them to my nephew, him and the other kids at the party all opted to play with them without the battle area most of the time anyway.

The tops come with wands that are magnetic. You use a flip switch that is on the tops to turn them on, and then use the wand to hold them in place for a few minutes to increase the tops speed. When you’re ready to go, you release the top from the wand by yanking the wand away and the top will spin around for quite a while on its own before needing to be recharged with the wand. When in use, the tops light up so they are a fun toy to play with in the dark (maybe at a sleepover?).

The tops work well on a variety of surfaces including floors, tables, chair tops, etc. They even worked on the rough cement floor in my brothers garage.

My nephew was happy with the set and it made a nice birthday gift for him. The only improvement I would like to see would be to make the battle dome made of a higher quality material. Seems how the tops can be controlled with the wand by sticking the wand under the dome, I believe that is why it is made of a flimsy material. So if that can’t be changed, I feel the price should be lowered to closer to the $20 range instead of $40.
