Yogurt has been a breakfast staple in my household for quite a while. I love Yoplait® original in strawberry and strawberry banana, while Ryan enjoys several of the Greek and Greek whipped varieties that come in flavors that are dessert-like such as caramel and lemon meringue.
It’s been chilly and rainy for much of the summer so far, so on the nice days that we’ve had I’ve been trying to take full advantage of the weather by doing summer activities and eating summer foods. I was craving a cold snack but wanted to avoid ice cream and other foods that are high in calories and low in nutrients. I realized I could use the Yoplait® yogurts that I already had at home to make wholesome frozen summer snacks. I put my Yoplait® Original Strawberry yogurt in the freezer for a couple of hours until it was frozen.
Yogurt won’t freeze nearly as hard as water or other liquids, so I was able to use a regular spoon to scrape it out into a bowl. I was excited at how well the yogurt retained its strawberry flavor while frozen. Yoplait® original yogurts recently reduced their sugar amount by 25%, which helped reduce the calorie count from 170 to 150 calories per 6oz cup, but they taste exactly the same to me. I’m all for reducing sugar and calories when it doesn’t effect flavor. It was a delicious way to make “homemade” frozen yogurt in an individual portion. I have always been bad about finishing an entire container of frozen yogurt in a single flavor, so for me this is a perfect way to get exactly as many portions as I want. I plan to stop at Walmart and purchase a range of yogurt flavors so I can make several varieties of frozen yogurt for summer snacking without getting bored of a single flavor. This would be a great option for families that have kids (or grown ups!) who have different flavor preferences for their frozen yogurt because you can get a flavor for everyone without having to buy a tub in each size.
For those looking to keep their snacks to a set amount of calories, Yoplait® has several yogurt varieties that come in set calorie amounts such as their Yoplait® Whips 100 which are 100 calories. Using the calorie-specific varieties would make it quick and easy to avoid overindulging.
I was so pleased with my frozen yogurt summer snacking creation that when I got hungry for a cold snack a few days later I again turned to yogurt. We had apples and bananas at home. I’ve made mini banana “sandwiches” before by putting a layer of peanut butter between two pieces of banana. I realized I could do the same thing but swap the yogurt for peanut butter. I placed wax paper over a plate, and made several banana and yogurt sandwiches with the Yoplait® Whips yogurt that we had. I had yogurt remaining so I cut up an apple and dipped one end of each piece in yogurt and laid them on the wax paper as well. I left the plate in the freezer until it became solidified and both types of yogurt-covered fruit were tasty and fulfilled my desire for a cold treat.
I am excited to continue exploring ways to make summer snacks with yogurt, and to try the recipes I already made but with new flavors of yogurt.
How do you use yogurt in your diet outside of breakfast? I’d love to hear your favorite summer snacking ideas.
