My dog Sofia went blind due to Retinal deterioration. I am still heartbroken over this. She is 11 and a Yorkiepom. I have another small dog Max who has treacha collapse and is 13. It is very hard to see them age and with the medical problems I can’t leave them alone for long periods of time. I have declined vaccination e with family for fear that they would not get the care they need. I am still very sad over these issues but they are my family and mean the world to me.

That’s so funny! While my pugs look quite different to me, a lot of people can’t tell them apart until they pay close attention to the differences in their features, seems how they are the same breed. So my nephew used to always ask me ‘what one’s that?” each time he came over and i’d tell him over and over. He was maybe 4-5 then, and his sister was about 2. At some point she started answering for me but no matter which one he pointed at, she would chime in ‘that’s FrankNBeans!’ like she thought they were BOTH named “frankandbeans” instead of Frank being one and Beans being the other. It was pretty cute.

I have a niece named, Francesca, and her parents called her Frankie Jo. Our family calls her Franks & Beans. Now I will have to tell her that I know two dogs named that too!

It’s hard to watch them age, isn’t it?

True for dogs and people too. Glad she can still get around.

But seems like she is coping pretty well considering. I have a senior cat I suspect is going blind too.

Have you saw the dogs that are blind with a guide dog?

Currently, we have a 12 year old dog (named Buddy) with chronic kidney disease, which is currently manageable, though expensive. Several years ago we had a 15 year old Border Collie/Blue Heeler mix (named Blue) that was blind, she was 15. Sometimes the things that she did was funny and other times it was just sad, especially knowing that she was getting closer to time to say goodbye. We are now seeing some cataracts in Buddy’s eyes, but it seems that he has a ways to go before he is completely blind.

Hopefully he’ll do just fine :). We are on ground level here, we don’t even have steps to come in/out of the house so that helped. If we had moved into a place with steps I probably would have gated the stairs to avoid that but otherwise, it’s probably fairly safe. At least our do is old enough to walk at a reasonable pace so even if she runs into things it’s not at a high speed or a very hard collision.

He also is older and diabetic. He actually functions very well rarely running into things. He is funny when there are treats about! We are moving soon too and it has me more anxious than I am sure he will be.

We had to do some adjustments as he still loved getting out for his daily walks but it was worth it. I still miss him.
