About 15 months ago I brought home an 8 week old kitten. I grew up with cats, but this was the first that I had owned as an adult. It didn’t take long at all for me to fall head over heels in love with my kitten Pepperoni. She’s officially a cat now, and has transitioned off kitten food and onto cat food.

As a new cat mom, I’m learning so much about keeping cats healthy. One surprising thing I discovered is that kitties are prone to dehydration! Wet food helps increase their water intake, but I also wanted a fountain to encourage my kitten Pepperoni to drink more water directly. Cats are naturally suspicious of stagnant water, so they tend to drink more from fountains. 

I opted for the Pioneer Pet Raindrop ceramic fountain since I wanted to avoid plastic, as plastics can harbor more bacteria.

Did you know that August is National Pet Month?  Furry friends become a HUGE part of a family’s life pretty quickly and most owners refer to them as part of the family because we truly love them that much.  

A Happy Day / A Sad Day

Earlier this year, my husband suggested we get a new puppy.  I was a bit leery but he explained that his dad always said to get a new puppy before your ‘old’ dog dies because then they can teach the little one.  Well, our ‘old’ dog was an amazing 6 1/2 year old black lab/german shepherd cross named Bear.  He was SUCH an amazing dog (once he outgrew that puppy stage where he ate everything including expensive winter coats.) So we set out and found a puppy to join our family.  He’s another ‘big’ dog and we named him Grizzly.  Bear and Grizzly became fast friends and where you’d see one, the other was always right behind. 

Well, I’m glad Grizzly is here because about three weeks ago, our sweet Bear was hit by a car and passed away.  The news was heartbreaking and we all took it really hard as he was the best dog with our kids as well as very protective of them.  Losing a beloved pet is hard.  But that’s also why we try to give them the best life possible during the time we are blessed with them.  And that includes supplying them with healthy treats.

We have two rather large four-legged family members. One is a Great Dane Mastiff mix and the other is a Pitbull mix. Both are chewing machines! They have been known to chew on firewood, 2 x 4s, shoes and boots, purses, and even furniture. Both of these pets are rescue dogs and we don’t know their entire stories.

We have three cats so finding a nutritious food that they all like and that also agrees with their bodies has been an adventure. Our oldest cat, Mittens, has recently been having major GI issues that we are finally getting through. We took him to the vet and everything (including bloodwork and x-rays) were normal so she thinks he just got majorly stressed when we babysat my sister’s cat about a month ago.

I used to have a pet hedgehog. I had him from the time he was old enough to be weaned from his mom, up until his natural passing. Sadly, they don’t live very long (3-5 years is the average hedgehog lifespan). I really enjoyed having a hedgehog and sometimes think about getting another one someday. I recently got looking at some hedgehog information online and saw a lot of questions about aggression, biting, whether hedgehogs are dangerous, and so on.

As a pug lover, I have to admit that I find pug smiles adorable. I love when their lower teeth protrude. When my baby sister was a toddler, she liked the movie Emperor’s New Groove and enjoyed making a “llama face”. She would suck in her upper lip, and extend her lower jaw revealing her lower teeth.
