While there are some things I just don’t like to think or talk about, I know it’s a smart idea to have safety plans in place. I just spent some time last week with our children discussing fire safety and what to do if there would ever be a fire, where to meet, and answering the kid’s questions.
Something that my husband and I have unfortunately had to discuss is what to do in case of a break in or any other situation that would warrant a defense. The reason for this initial discussion is because we had a stranger walk through our front door. My husband was upstairs taking a nap with two of our boys and I was downstairs with our daughter and baby. Our daughter was playing Nick Jr. on the computer and I had been laying on the couch for about five minutes when I heard our front door open. I wasn’t immediately alarmed because I have a cousin who will drop by unexpectedly and she will just come in without knocking. So I didn’t move. Perhaps twenty or thirty seconds went by without anyone saying anything so I got up to see what she was doing. Imagine my surprise when I walked over to the stairway to see a strange man standing there! (I still get chills remembering this day when I tell the story.)
He was a big guy wearing a big coat. I asked if I could help him and he mumbled an answer that was incomprehensible. After about a minute of trying to have a conversation and coming to the conclusion that we definitely did NOT know this man, I told our daughter to go upstairs and get dad. Of course, him not realizing what was going on, I could hear him stumbling around half asleep. I shouted his name up the stairs to try to hurry him without making our “guest” alarmed. Finally, my husband made it down and I stepped aside and asked if he knew this man (because I didn’t know what else to say to try to convey the situation.) The man was a little out of it and stumbled across his words and feet as my husband tried talking to him. I had no idea if I should call the cops, get a gun, or just stand there holding our baby. I tried catching my husbands eye to see what he wanted me to do but he kept his eyes on the strange man. The man ended up walking out the door once my husband started questioning him. As soon as he was out, my husband told me to call the cops since the guy was clearly in no condition to drive. In the end, the man crashed down the road and that was the longest 15 minutes I’ve ever had to wait for anyone to show up. Since that day, we not only lock our front door, but we also have a plan in place. With that plan, though, includes making sure that our four children stay safe in case of an intruder and for every day with a weapon in the home. That’s where Sentry Safe comes in. I was very happy to partner with them for this review.
The Sentry Safe Quick Access Pistol Safe is a secure solid steel pistol safe. Even though we want to have a weapon available to protect ourselves if necessary, it is extremely important to us that we keep our weapons secure and out of the hands of children. Their safety in our home every day is a top priority. The Quick Access Pistol Safe has a digital lock but also comes with an over-ride key in case of battery failure. The digital lock can be programmed by the owner and is easy to use. The buttons push easily and the safe opens swiftly. While being compact and sturdy, this safe also gives quick one-handed access. The stainless steel construction and beveled edge make this safe pry resistant to unauthorized access yet the compression gas strut opens quietly when authorized access is used. Since the safe is black in color, it is also easier to camouflage/conceal in its location.
The Sentry Safe Quick Access Pistol Safe is quite a bit heavier than I was expecting, however, we really like it. It is compact, sturdy, easy to use, and just what we needed. I would not want a gun in our home without a safe secured place to store it. We teach our children to respect guns but I still want the weapons under lock and key to err on the side of caution. Safety is vital.

I’m a city girl turned country by my awesome husband and we have three busy boys and two darling daughters. I love spending time with my family, reading Karen Kingsbury novels, and catching up with friends while our kiddos have play dates. I’m blessed beyond measure and can’t wait to see what God has in store.

Thank goodness your family made it through that terrifying ordeal safely. My mouth dropped that in spite of your fear, you were concerned for this drunken intruder’s safety! Amazing woman!

What an important post! You learned a valuable lesson and I’m sure the kids did too. We have a fire nearby in Calabasas (CA) that started yesterday from a car accident downing power lines. Freak things will happen and good to be prepared as is with gun safety.
Love your blog and I check in often due to your emails!!! Thanks so much!!!
