*I was provided with a Petbox in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
Subscription boxes have gotten so popular and while I’ve seen a few different pet ones, PetBox is the most unique pet subscription box that I’ve found to date for a few reasons. One of the biggest (or maybe even THE biggest) downside of subscription boxes is getting items that you aren’t interested in or able to use for some reason. PetBox understands this dilemma so they allow YOU to pick what you want to get in your box each month if you want to. You’re given six “credits” and then you can browse the catalog of available products to choose from. Some items are worth 1 credit, others 2 and others 3. So you can fill your box with six 1-credit items, two 3-credit items or tons of other combinations. Or, if you prefer the surprise you can allow them to pick for you instead. PetBox is also unique because they offer subscription boxes for cats in addition to dogs so that your feline friends don’t have to miss out.
The reason why the choose-your-item subscription box idea for pets interested me is because my dogs are picky little things when it comes to toys. They won’t chew on fake bones and while they like plush toys, they only like really small ones so your average stuffed toy is too big and scares them. So when we are sent random toys (even if they are designed for small dogs), they usually don’t like them at all so I end up donating them.
On the other hand, I love trying out new types of treats with my dogs because they’re willing to eat just about any type of treat or chew out there and the grocery stores in my area have small selections and most of what they do have is super processed, full of corn filler type stuff. So, we love discovering new, natural treats via subscription boxes.
In addition to toys and treats, PetBox has categories for bones and bully sticks, waste bags, grooming accessories (like brushes and wipes) and accessories (like bowls and tags).
When I was preparing to order my PetBox, we were on our last bag of treats and it was almost empty so I opted to include four bags of treats (three that were worth 1 credit and one that was worth 2) and one toy.
I was excited that the JW pet isqueak bouncin baseball small is just 2.5 inches in width, making it a smaller dog ball than I had ever seen before and it also squeaks. I had hope that my dogs would take to it, but they didn’t. This is just another example of how picky my dogs are when it comes to toys – I haven’t completely figured out their toy preferences yet (they’re so complicated it seems!) but I still appreciate having the ability to choose based on my experience with their personalities as I have some chance of being successful instead of just being sent something random which would most certainly bring failure.
The treats were all really well received.
The first bag was YumZies hickory bacon grain free treats. These are USA made, grain free treats that have omega 3 & 6 fatty acids.
The second bag of treats was Wet Noses Cheddar Biscuits. These are USDA organic, wheat, corn and soy free cheddar flavored dog treats. They are US made and sourced as well. The box is 14oz (nearly a pound) so I completely understand why they were valued as 2 credits instead of one.
We also got Honest Kitchen Smooches chicken cranberry recipe dog treats. These are super cute heart shaped treats that are hand baked, wheat free cookies that are 100% human grade.
The last bag that we got was Happy Hips Jerky Bars. My dogs are older (8.5 and 9.5) and Frank seems to have hip and/or back leg pain sometimes, mainly when it’s really cold outside he starts to hobble a bit on one side of his back end. I thought these treats would be perfect to have on hand when he’s having a rough day. It’s nearly impossibe to tell if they’re really helping or not but I feel better that I have something to at least try to help him with. They are 85% chicken and have glucosamine and chondroitin.
I used Amazon to get approximate prices for these items and my total came to $47.93. The price of PetBox varies depending on how long you subscribe. It costs $39 for a single month or decreases in price if you subscribe for longer, costing just $29 a box if you subscribe for 12 months.
I’d love to see PetBox expand their options so that you could combine choosing with surprise. In my case, I’d like to be able to say that I want my points divided among treats, bones & grooming items (no toys). Others might like the freedom to hand select one or two items and have the others randomized in the category of their choosing.

What a cute idea! We no longer have dogs but this is a super cool idea!

Subscription boxes are becoming so huge and the thing I often don’t like about them is that you can get things that you can’t or won’t use, just like you mentioned for your dog. Love the idea of being able to pick your own items, that makes sense!

What a fun idea. I love giving my Toby surprises and new treats and toys. I may have missed it in your review, but can you specify what size dog you have? My dog is actually a big dog and a lot of the smaller toys/chews just don’t work for him.
That is pretty cool – my dog would so love it
