When my niece Kelsie was born last March, she had a bit of a rough start. She stayed in the hospital for a couple of weeks after being born for various reasons, one of which being that she would only eat for small amounts of time before she would quit sucking. Even while she was eating, she wasn’t latching onto a bottle very well and the milk would spill across her face. She wasn’t taking in enough nutrition so she was tube fed for a couple of weeks and even left the hospital with a feeding tube to use at home. We were told that she had low facial muscle tone which was contributing to her issues. My sister tried offering her a variety of different pacifiers that she had gotten from baby showers and even really early on, the only pacifiers that Kelsie would suck on without accidentally spitting it out were Nuk ones.
Kelsie is 11 months now and thankfully, she’s been healthy for months now. Yet, she still will only take Nuk brand pacifiers.
We were recently sent some products from Nuk to try out. Kelsie is 11 months now so she’s still having milk in a bottle but anything else that she drinks goes into sippy cups. We were sent Nuk pacifiers, bottles and a sippy cup to test out with Kelsie. Of course, I knew she would take to the pacifiers right away. She tried to suck on them before I even got them out of the package! The new heart shaped design is so adorable.
She’s used Nuk advanced orthodontic bottles in the past so I thought she’d take to it just fine as well and she did. Something that I like about Nuk bottles is that they come in large sizes – holding 10oz instead of the typical 8oz. Kelsie still usually just takes 6 oz or so at a time but I’ve heard other moms say that their babies will want one 8oz bottle after the other at 5 months old. For babies like that, the larger bottle size will be really nice. For formula fed babies, the extra size is nice for mixing formula without making a big mess, too.
I didn’t realize that Gerber and Nuk are related companies but they are. The sippy cup that we were sent is called the Gerber Graduates Advance Developmental Insulated EasyStraw Cup. It’s suggested for use with babies 12+ months so Kelsie was a bit younger than recommended but I thought we’d give them a try anyway. I hadn’t seen her try a straw sippy cup before so I wasn’t sure how she would do. She did seem to want to tip the sippy cup back like she has to do with her other cups and bottles, but it didn’t cause spilling and she did know to suck on the straw so she was successful at drawing liquid out of it. The cup seemed a little big compared to her but she seemed to control it just fine. The cup is insulated and is designed to keep beverages cool for up to six hours.
