barkbox march review

Our Barkbox for March came today! I still get so excited waiting for our BarkBox each month. I’ve had some people ask me which size BarkBox to get for a pug. We are subscribed to the small size box (suggested for dogs 0-20lbs) my pugs are just a hair bigger than 20lbs (21 and 24lbs or so) but they will only play with very small toys (normal sized or large ones intimidate them) so we get the small box and it has worked out great so far. See my previous reviews below:

This month’s box had two toys, two bags of treats and a chew.

barkbox bully stick

The chew was a Barkworthies bully stick. My dogs absolutely love bully sticks and Barkworthies are one of their favorite brands (not all bully sticks are the same according to my dogs). We got one of these back in our December and January boxes as well. Though we got an apology letter in our January box saying we were suppose to get something else. I don’t mind getting these because my dogs love them but I can see why some people might prefer to have new things each month instead. These retail for about $2.50-$3 a piece.

barkbox aussie naturals

Both of the toys in this month’s box are from the brand Aussie Naturals – one is an egg and the other is bacon. I found these amusing seems how my dogs are frank and beans, it just seems so fitting that they’d get egg and bacon toys. These are leather and coconut fiber toys which is a really unique material, we’ve never owned toys made with either of those materials before. The egg has the “yolk” part that is really squishy because it’s basically a pocket that holds the squeaker, while the “white” of the egg is squishy but more firm than typical cotton or poly-fil stuffed toys. Despite being leather, the toys don’t have an odor to them that I could notice. The bacon is similar to the egg but it has extra strips of leather added to the top (as decoration for the bacon) but that will provide a texture for chewing, too. The bacon is the perfect size for my dogs toy preferences because they can easily carry it around in their mouth. The egg is bigger but thin so they can carry it too. My dogs are toy snobs and didn’t take to these but they don’t care for probably 90% of dog toys, they’re incredibly picky. The toys are eco-friendly. I couldn’t find these listed online anywhere so I am not sure of the price. The bacon was made just for BarkBox but I couldn’t find the egg listed online either. Aussie Naturals has a full line of leather dog toys listed on their site and the smallest item is a medium leather bone that is bigger than the egg and bacon but it retails for $9.99, I imagine these would go for less than that because of the size.

barkboxwag

The first box of treats that we got this month was from Wagatha’s and are called breakfast biscuits. These are made with organic, human grade ingredients (meaning YOU could eat them – they smell like apple cinnamon) , are wheat, lactose, corn and soy free. These are typical bone-shaped dog treats that are about an inch long and they are easy to split in half if you want to give your pup a smaller treat. My dogs will take most any treat but they definitely prefer meaty smelling treats so they sniffed these quite a while before consuming them. This brand has a lot of personality, I admit that I read the entire box because after reading the back I was just drawn in. The side panel has a list of “lessons we learned from our dogs” and it’s just a really cute box that shows the brand’s personality a lot.  The 8oz box that we were sent sells for $5.99 on wag.com.

barkboxhare

The last item in our Barkbox was from the brand Hare of The Dog. These are rabbit-based dog treats that are wheat free. They have dandelion and apple in them so they have a lot of antioxidants. These are made and sourced in the US. These are bone shaped treats that are thin and about an inch long. The container is plastic and snaps back closed after being opened (I love when dog treats come in packaging that can be closed). These are nearly odorless and because of the lack of meaty smell, my dogs sniffed them for a while before eating them but after trying them the first time, they seemed to like them just fine. These are $5.49 on Natural Pet Warehouse.

I enjoyed getting two boxes of treats that are not training sized as we don’t use many training sized treats. The combined value of the bully stick and two boxes of treats is $14.48. If the toys sell for around $6 each (just my estimate/guess) that would bring the total value of the box to $26.48, not bad considering each box is $24 when you sign up for 3 months (and boxes ship for free!).

If you sign up after clicking through on my link, you’ll save $5.

Do you subscribe to BarkBox? What was in your box this month?

  • I’ve never tried a Barkbox. We just got a puppy in January and I’m just learning about different things out there. I like the sound of the bones, leather makes me tink it might hold up better then the cloth toys.

I’ve never heard of backbox but I love that they support organic and natural goodies. My pooch would love it.

  • I have received another dog subscription box and my two dogs loved it. I would really LOVE to send them a Barkbox too!

  • First of all…you pug is so cute. We are totally pug people as well…we have two!

I’ve never heard of BarkBox…but I bet our dogs will love them!

  • What a little cutie pie. I bet he enjoys his treats!

  • If your dogs did not care for the egg and bacon toys, would you consider selling them?

I donated them to the local humane society already, sorry. July 15th will make 1 year since I adopted my two pugs so I am going to be posting a series of dog related reviews and giveaways including some dog toys so be sure to come back if you want a chance to win some toys.

My Yorkie was a six-pounder and I’ll most likely get another small dog, so I like the small dog box subscription reviews too. They didn’t have boxes like this when I had my dogs so I’d be as excited as them to see what arrived too! I seem to like the cute toys over the treats but I’m human of course!
