I was compensated for this post. All opinions are my own.

In the 1970’s, around 67 million households had pets. By 2012, that number had more than tripled – to 164 million households had pets. Like 83% of american households, I consider my pugs Frank & Beans to be part of my family. They aren’t just dogs to me and I want them to live happy, healthy lives. This means that I need to keep an eye on what I am allowing them to consume. I hear a lot of chatter about avoiding too many table scraps. While it’s important to monitor the amounts of table scraps that dogs are getting, their brand and type of dog food matters too. In my mind, it matters a lot more seems how it makes up a much higher percentage of your dogs overall food intake. Yet, you rarely hear people discuss the quality of commercial dog foods.

A couple of years before getting Frank & Beans, Ryan & I were sharing an apartment with a friend of ours who worked at a pet store. He was the first person to introduce me to the idea of checking the ingredients in pet food. He explained that low quality foods will list a ‘filler’ as the first ingredient in the bag, where as better foods have a recognizable food like chicken or turkey as the first ingredient. He said this is the simplest rule of thumb to go by when determining if a pet food is of quality or not. Of course, there are a million other ways to check foods and learn about what is in it, but that’s a great first step.

  • I absolutely love that there are better options for dog food out there now. Only one of my dogs from my childhood is still alive and lives with my mom, but I’ve encouraged her to purchase better dog food for her. She’s been a lot healthier ever since. The store right by her house in Moline, IL sells Wellness and ironically, that’s what she buys!

  • I remember my grandma used to cook chicken and rice for her dog (poodle). We thought the dog was a lil spoiled b/c she turned up her nose at “regular” dog food. Maybe she just had better taste.

  • This Sounds Like A Well Balance Product For Dogs I’ll Have To Try!

  • We don’t have any dogs, but we do have cats! It doesn’t really make any sense to buy your pets crappy food and not check the ingredients when most people consider them another family member. Thanks for sharing!

My Yorkie was so tiny and ate so little that I had no problem buying the best food, especially when he got older and needed more specialized options. Yes, my grandmother also cooked for her Yorkie too!
