*I was provided with Milkotein product. All opinions are my own.

I adopted my two pugs 11 months ago. They were already 8 and 9 years old, so they were well past their puppy-chew stage but they were anxious dogs. I quickly realized that chewing appeared to lessen their anxiety, and we began using it as a coping mechanism. Since then, I have been testing out just about every type of dog chew that I found.

Milkotein dog chew

I recently discovered Milkotein bars, and was excited to test them out. They are a low-fat, low-calorie, high protein chew that is really long lasting. The ingredient list contains just two items, milk and lime juice. The chews come in a variety of sizes, we were sent the miniature size and light size for Frank and Beans. The miniature size is for dogs who are around 20lbs or less. This size bar measures about 1 1/4 inches wide and 2.5 inches long, and about 1/4 of an inch thick. The light chews are about the same thickness and width but about twice as long. They are recommended for dogs 20-40 lbs. These chews are very hard feeling, they make a “clunk” sound when they hit my floors. I’m unable to pick up any scent from them even when I intentionally try to smell them.

My dogs are picky when it comes to chews. While my dogs like to chew, they only seem to be interested in chewing when they can get pieces of fairly quickly. They won’t take to raw bones unless they have skin or meat left on them, for example. I couldn’t get them to chew on the Milkotein bars as-is, but a really cool feature of Milkotein bars is how they can be microwaved to create a “puff” which is a crispy treat instead of a chew. For the miniature bars, I put the chew into the microwave for about 2.5 minutes and it “bubbled” into this odd shape. In the photo above you can see a regular, raw Milkotein bar next to the microwaved one (they started out the same size and shape). Once the bar cooled, it felt really solid but was a different texture inside so I was able to break it into two pieces. It had a dark spot in the middle so I think it burned a little. Once microwaved, Frank happily ate the bar.

When I microwaved the second bar, I flipped it over after 1 minute and it did not get the dark ‘burned’ spot and it puffed up much larger than the first one did. This was the first kind of chew that I had found that has the potential to be ‘turned into’ a new type of treat. If you’re just beginning to try out various types of chews, a Milkotein would be a smart purchase because even if your dog doesn’t care for it in chew form, you can microwave it so you aren’t just out your money. For dogs who are less finicky about their chews, I would imagine that they last much longer than rawhide or a bully stick because the texture is so much harder. My mother in law has a pit bull that likes harder chews so I plan to purchase her a Milkotein bar for Christmas as I know she will love it.
