Sewing Supply and Fabric Storage Solution

I started sewing about five years ago. Since then I have tried a variety of ways to store my fabric and sewing supplies but eventually everything would end up in a big mess again. I have a lot of fabric in a variety of random sized pieces which makes up the bulk of my stash. I also have fabric scraps that are big enough to still be useful, so I hate to toss them out. Plus needles, thread, ribbon and a few odds and ends like velcro and a seam ripper.

ClosetMaid Premium Weathered Teak 6-cube organizer review

The ClosetMaid Premium Weathered Teak 6-Cube Organizer has been the perfect solution for me. While I have fabric in a variety of materials, I use them for basically all the same purposes, so I decided to organize my material by color. When I have a project in mind, I usually know what color scheme I want to go with so having the material by color will make it quick and easy for me to find what I want. I went in a rainbow color so that I remember which colors are where in the pile.

Storage solution for sewing supplies

On the other side of the organizer I put two bins (standard ClosetMaid bins fit into this organizer) and left the top one empty. One of the bins is where I tossed all of my mini fabric scraps just randomly. This will keep them contained nicely. The other bin has thread, extra bobbins, ribbon, scissors, needles and other sewing accessories.

Sewing Material Storage Solution

On the top right I left the necessities that I use with every project – my measuring tape, pin-holder, and seam ripper so they are easily accessible.

I love knowing that if I ever decide to quit using this organizer for my sewing materials, I would be able to use it for so many other things. It came with a back panel that can be nailed to the back to prevent items from falling off but I preferred the look of leaving it off.

The ClosetMaid Premium Weathered Teak 6-cube organizer can be found at Home Depot for $79.98. It stands 39 inches high and is 26 inches wide.

My white ClosetMade storage cubes are stacked near the TV currently, full of exercise DVDs and books, and the fabric is in the closet. My apartment just doesn’t have much storage space so I love these cubes.
