Since we home school, our family gets to determine the amount of time spent outdoors on any particular day, no matter the time of year. While the Minnesota Winters can get unbearable and we do hole up indoors for periods at a time, when good weather hits, we definitely make sure to get outside. We have especially loved the early Spring we had this year with unseasonably warmer temps than normal so I feel like it’s been “Summer” for months already. About mid-May, we completed our school for the year and have been relishing in the extra time and using it to hit the local parks, on extra trips to the library, and to just enjoy our own backyard. So help kids explore the great outdoors, Learning Resources offers a large variety of products including the one they sent us for review.
The Learning Resources Primary Science Outdoor Discovery Set is packed full of adventure and ideas for exploring the great outdoors. This kit contains:
- 10 Sturdy Double Sided Activity Cards
- Sprouting Jar With Two Different Style Lids
- Small Lightweight Watering Can
- 3 Plant Pots
- 3 Plant Markers
- Bug Jar With Magnifying Top
- Bug Scooper
I love that this set contains brightly colored fun pieces that draw kids’ attention. My kiddos love to explore the outdoors and dig in the dirt so the fact that we were able to have another reason to head out was perfect. Since the kids just planted some peas in a big pot, they chose to save the little ones from this set for next year. However, the small watering can is the perfect size for little hands to control.
I really like the unique feature of the Bug Observation Jar’s wings that spread open to allow the kids to see a magnified view of whatever creature they caught. It allows them to get up close and personal without having to actually touch the bug if they don’t want since they could use the Bug Scooper to get it in there.
Overall, this is a great set. Geared for ages 3 and up, it’s a fun way to get the kids outside this Summer. They start having so much fun that they completely forget they are also learning.

I’m a city girl turned country by my awesome husband and we have three busy boys and two darling daughters. I love spending time with my family, reading Karen Kingsbury novels, and catching up with friends while our kiddos have play dates. I’m blessed beyond measure and can’t wait to see what God has in store.

I’ve spent a fair amount of time looking at all the fun and educational items Learning Resources offers. This would be especially great for city kids who don’t have access to a farm like yours and would learn that food comes from nature and not just from the grocery store, lol.
