When I was in school, Science was definitely not my best subject. I found it hard to retain the information taught to us through the books. Of course, whenever we’d have hands-on learning, it was much easier to remember. As a matter of fact, I still have vivid memories from a science experiment in the 5th grade where we worked with a cow’s lung. Seeing it get inflated and diagramming it was really neat and definitely made a mark for many of us students. So whenever I have the chance to bring hands on learning to our kids, I grab it. As usual, Learning Resources is a great place to turn.
Erupting Cross-section Volcano Model
We actually just went to a Moana themed birthday party earlier this summer where one of the activities the kids participated in was making a volcano erupt. Ever since that day, our 6 year old son has been begging for us to get our own volcano. Turns out, Learning Resources had just what we needed with their Erupting Cross-section Volcano Model.
But going a step further than just letting kids see an eruption, this model volcano features a detailed cross section that shows the insides of a volcano. Children can locate the lower mantle, magma chamber, dike, conduit, and more.
What’s Included In The Box:
- Easy Lava Recipe
- 13″ Clear Plastic Tray
- Removable Tube
- Detailed Cross Section
- Activity & Fact Guide
Quite large in size but still lightweight and easy to use. I really like that the entire volcano is plastic and washable, including the interior cross section details. This makes clean up a breeze. The clear plastic tray is also large enough to capture all the “lava” the recipe makes with room to spare even so I was able to carry all the way to the sink without spilling.
Overall, the kids have been having a blast with the Volcano. They also plan to experiment with different lava recipes and colors in the future to change things up a bit.
Primary Science Leap & Launch Rocket
Next up, sending things launching into the air is sure to be a blast, literally! With the Primary Science Leap & Launch Rocket, little scientists get the chance to enjoy early space science with hands on fun.
What’s Included In The Box:
- 2 5″ Soft Foam Rockets
- Activity & Space Facts Guide
- 6″ Stand And Launcher
Easy to use, there is very little prep involved. Simply place the rotating adjustable navigation piece onto the launching pad, add a rocket, and stomp on the giant red button. Kids can twist and adjust the navigation piece to try and land their rockets on the sun or moon cards that are included.
Overall, another great product from Learning Resources. The kids enjoy the thrill of seeing the rocket launch off while I love that someone even as young as our two year old can play. Of course, the amount of force used when launching the rocket determines how far it flies so younger children don’t see as big a launch. However, that doesn’t matter to our daughter as she loves seeing it go.

I’m a city girl turned country by my awesome husband and we have three busy boys and two darling daughters. I love spending time with my family, reading Karen Kingsbury novels, and catching up with friends while our kiddos have play dates. I’m blessed beyond measure and can’t wait to see what God has in store.
