Recently, my 2.5 year old nephew Drew has taken a huge interest in pretend play. One day I found a hand puppet and began talking to him through it and he thought it was really funny and we wound up playing with the puppets for quite a while. So when I was offered the chance to try out a Puppet Monster for review, I jumped at the offer.
Puppet Monsters are monster hats that have long arms with hands. Inside of the hands there are small pockets that let you slip a finger or two inside of them so that you can control the hands and arms. While wearing the monster on your head, you can duck down behind a counter or other surface so that only the monster is showing up and then put on a “puppet show” with your monster.
We’ve had a pretty cold spring here in Michigan – as I type this on April 21st we have snow on the ground. So when I’ve had Drew we have spent a lot of time playing in the garage as it has a lot of open space where he can be loud and get his wiggles out without freezing outside. The garage has some computer chairs without backs that have been perfect for using with our Puppet Monster. Drew thinks it’s so funny when I use the puppet with a chair and he likes to try to control it himself though he doesn’t quite get the concept yet. He tends to leave the upper half of his face showing above the chair so that he can see me – without seeming to realize that I can see him – hehe.
Unlike most puppets, the puppet monster has two small pockets that Drew can easily slide his fingers into. Hand puppets tend to frustrate drew because they are made for much bigger hands than what he has, so he can’t fit his fingers in all of the places at once. So this puppet is a fun option for toddlers.
The inside of the hat has a bunch of tiny slots, and the arms, nose and eyes are positioned through the holes with a plastic piece that holds them in place. However, you can twist the plastic piece so that it slides out of the hole and comes apart from the hat. Then you can position it in a new place and put them in a new hole. This lets you create silly faces with eyes and arms in strange places. They can also be used if you purchase an accessories kit (which is basically a new “face” for your monster). So that’s fun too.
Buy it: You can purchase Puppet monsters from Buy Puppet Monsters. Puppet monsters are $19.95 each. Use the code PUPPET to take $5 off your order.
