So, by now, I’m pretty sure we’ve all heard about the best-selling book 50 Shades of Grey, by EL James. It’s a topic that people are pretty divided about. Some people love the book, some people hate it, but no one can deny that it’s selling like crazy. Whether you’re in either camp, however, 50 Shades! The Musical is a musical you can certainly enjoy. My sister plays the lead in the musical, which is currently touring the country.
50 Shades! The Musical is a parody of the famous, or infamous 50 Shades of Grey book. I saw the show when it was playing in Chicago, and I loved it. I couldn’t stop laughing! It’s definitely a show for adults only, and contains adult material. However, there is no nudity, or anything too risqué. You won’t spend the entire show blushing, but rather laughing out loud.
50 Shades! The Musical follows a group of housewives that begin reading 50 Shades of Grey in their book club. They divulge into the story, which is then played out on stage. The musical follows Ana, played by my sister Amber Petty and Christian, played by Chris Grace, and their love story, poking fun at the storyline and characters along the way. The show is full of original songs and score, and features a live band.
The show I went to was completely sold-out, and this has been a trend with the musical. The audience loved the show, there was hardly a moment’s break from laughing. The cast really added to the overall hilarity. They were simply great. Normally in a play or musical, there’s at least one person that stands out, because they just aren’t pulling their weight, acting, or singing-wise. This was not the case with this show. And even though this is a funny, parody musical, the singing was still amazing. The cast has the strong voices you’d expect from a good musical.
When the show ended in Chicago, the cast received a standing ovation, and loud cheers. There didn’t seem to be a single person in the audience that didn’t enjoy the musical. It was simply a blast.
Whether you adore the books, loathe them, or even if you haven’t read them, you will still enjoy the show. It has something for everyone. And while the books are primarily popular with women, the musical definitely doesn’t discriminate. The men in the audience were laughing just as hard as the women.
Even if my sister was not the lead in this musical, I would still recommend you go see it. I honestly do not remember the last time I laughed so hard. It’s tons of fun! Just leave the kids at home for this one.

Thanks for the info, I usually like the parodies better than the original!

I can’t believe that they’re going near the towns I just moved from. Doggone it! This looks totally worth seeing!

That is awesome that you have such a talented sister. I’m not a fan of 50 shades, but I can totally see how a parody would be pretty funny.

I know this was a few years ago, but never heard of the play. I never saw the movie and also not a fan of the whole idea. Great that your sister is starring in this.
I hope they come to Seattle! It looks so good.
