*I was sent two hats for review from Knit Babies in exchange for this post.

When we found out that my sister was pregnant, we quickly began to wonder if the baby would be a boy or a girl. While we were really happy to be getting a new baby either way, it’s always fun to daydream about the gender and how that gender might influence the family and/or relationships. Seems how my sister already had a two year old, I primarily was curious to find out the gender to see what that would mean for Drew. Would he get a brother? Being two years apart, they might be close friends, and it would be easy to find them matching clothing for photos – how cute would that be? Or maybe the baby was a girl – it had five nephews ages 2-8, so the idea of having a baby girl around for the first time in a long time was exciting, too.

Now that Kelsie is here – it’s weird to think that just six months ago we were still wondering if she was a boy or a girl. She’s 2 months old today, and already she fits into our family so well that I can’t imagine her being any different than she is. But, it does mean that it’s harder to find matching outfits for her and Drew for photos or special events. In fact, I thought it was a lost cause and then I stumbled upon Knit Babies, a website that sells hand knitted and crocheted hats for babies, toddlers and even big kids.  Their prices are really reasonable for handmade hats. Some of their more basic caps like the lavender owl hat above are as low as $12. Plus, they offer free shipping on all US orders. Additionally, 10% of profits are donated to a children’s charity in Texas.

Their more detailed designs, such as the three above all fall in the $18-$19 range, which is still really reasonable for such cute, detailed hats. What really made my heart stop was the super adorable monster hats from Knit Babies. I have a love of monsters, and when I found the blue one I immediately thought of Drewie. When I discovered that the same hat is available in pink, I was completely sold. Until seeing these matching blue and pink hats, it hadn’t occurred to me that we could still buy the kids matching hats even though they are different genders. I’ve seen so many cute photography sessions done that include super cute knit or crocheted hats, and these monster hats would be perfect for a sibling photo shoot, don’t you think?

I once paid between $25 and $30 for a hat (before shipping!) for a crocheted animal hat and it began to unravel on the second wear. So, while I was excited to see these monster hats listed at $18 each I was holding my breath a little bit until I had the hats in my hand so that I could feel their quality. I was VERY pleasantly surprised. I didn’t even have to touch them, just seeing them in person I could tell how tightly woven they were and how these would not be unraveling after the second use like hats I’ve purchased elsewhere. Upon first touch, I was impressed with how soft these hats were. While I can’t say I’ve ever felt a “rough” knit or crocheted hat, these are clearly made with a softer material than others I’ve felt.

These monster hats are available in three sizes. 0-6 months, 1-3 years and 3-10 years. The site has a size chart that I would really recommend using after using a tape measure to get your child’s head measurement. I didn’t know their head measurements, so I ordered a 0-6 month for Kelsie and a 1-3 years for Drew. Drew will be 3 at the end of the summer and when getting him dressed, his head is sometimes rather hard to get through the neck hole of his shirts, so I thought he had a big noggin for his age. So, I debated about ordering the 3-10 size but I thought that a hat that could fit a 10 year old would definitely be too big for him. Turns out, the 1-3 size fits him great. The 1-3 size hat is suppose to fit people with a head measurement of 18″-21″. I’m sure it will still fit him come winter time which was my goal. Kelsie was 7 weeks old when I tried this hat on her and it’s really quite big, I think the photos almost make it look like it fits better than it actually does. Side by side, the hats appear to have a very minimal size difference. Though, she was 8.5lbs at the time of these photos so she was still the size of some babies at birth. The 0-6 month size is aimed at head sizes 13″-17″. By fall, Kelsie will be closer to six months so if she continues to stay petite, I would imagine this hat will be fitting well for her next winter. So, I lucked out on both hats but I would certainly recommend that you measure your child’s head before ordering.

The quality of both hats is truly superior to others that I have tried. I would absolutely recommend Knit Babies to anyone who is in the market for super cut knit or crocheted hats, whether you’re wanting them as a photo prop or for use as a winter hat. Their super high quality combined with amazing prices (and even helping a charity with your purchase!) can’t be beat.
