$20 solar desk lamp

Ever since I got a solar powered flashlight a coupe of years ago, I have absolutely loved solar powered products. I thought they seemed neat prior to trying them, but after having one to use I just completely fell in love. It’s so nice to not have to worry about (or spend money on!) batteries or a cord that limits you to where you can move around and increases your electric bill. It’s awesome that solar powered products save us money, are convenient AND they are better for the environment.

I had no idea that solar powered desk lamps existed until a few weeks ago when I was approached about checking out IKEA’s Sunnan Solar Powered Desk Lamp. When I saw that the price tag was just $19.99 I was truly shocked. Most plug-in lamps are around that same price point, and then they draw energy from your home so over time they cost you a bit more as well. I was eager to try it out.

The Sunnan Solar Desk lamp has a bendable neck so that you can position the light in a variety of angles and positions. The base of the lamp is round and has a square solar panel in the center that pops out so that you can leave the panel in the sun to charge without having to move the entire lamp. There is a single button on the base of the lamp that allows you to turn it off and on. In all, it’s a pretty basic lamp but who really needs bells and whistles on a lamp, anyway?

The lamp comes in five colors – red, green, blue, yellow and orange. I love the bright colors because they stand out. The variety of colors also allows them to fit in any bedroom whether it’s a child’s room or an adults.

The lamp takes 9-12 hours to charge (depending on how sunny it is) so if you plan to use the lamp regularly, you’ll want to either position the lamp so that it is close to a window or get in the habit of leaving the solar panel outside each day. I am not good at remembering to take it outside, so I leave it near a window and it recharges just fine though I suspect it might charge better/faster if left outside instead.

The solar charge is stored in three AA batteries, but these batteries are said to last a minimum of two years – so the cost there is extremely minimal, as is the waste produced.

I really like this little lamp and once we move, I would love to get another if our new place is set up in a way that we can position the lamps near a window. I’m still surprised that these lamps are just $19.99. I think they are well worth the cost for a convenient, efficient lamp.

You can purchase the Sunnan lamp from IKEA stores.
