*I was sent a mattress pad for the purposes of this review. All opinions are my own.

I think mattress pads are cool because they protect your mattress from sweat or even food spills or stains while also making your bed more comfortable. Mattress pads seem to have a huge range of both price and quality. You can find them for anywhere between $15 and $300+. I have a hard time making purchasing decisions when there is such a huge price range to choose from, but I usually aim towards the cheaper end, but not insanely cheap. I was recently sent a 1.5″ Geo-tech Memory Foam Mattress Topper from Curtain & Bath Outlet for review.

The Geo-tech Foam Mattress Topper is $46.99 for a Full size bed like I have which seemed like a good price range to try. In my experience there are two main types of mattress pads. There are those that are very thin (maybe 2-3 times the thickness of a bed sheet) and is designed to protect the mattress from sweat and other fluids that might get into the mattress and be hard or impossible to get out, but aren’t suppose to make the bed any more comfortable. Then there are mattress pads that are thicker – 1/2 an inch or more and are designed to make the bed more comfortable but also provide a barrier between you and the mattress to help protect the mattress. The mattress pad that I was sent from Curtain & Bath Outlet is the latter type and is 1.5 inches thick.

As you can see from the photo, it does “remember” your position for a split second after you move away but it’s really quite different than what most people would think of when they think memory foam. It does have a shape of its own and doesn’t stay molded as long as the memory foam products I have experience with. For the first 2 days or so, it stayed lopsided from being packaged during shipping (which is why the bed looks so lumpy bumpy in the photos) but it did flatten out after a couple of days. It has a very standard foam feeling (kind of like those egg-crate style mattress pad material) but is flat instead.

This photo is not an accurate representation of the toppers color, I edited the color and contrast so that the engraved designs in the topper would appear more visible.

When you look closely at the pad, it has square and rectangular shapes lightly carved into the surface that allow the mattress pad to move easily without the entire pad having to shift in the direction of the weight, only the pad directly surrounding the weight gets moved. Seems how it is that type of foam, you’ll want to be careful to keep pets or any sharp objects away from it. I left it uncovered for about two hours while I was washing and drying our sheet one day and my dogs jumped on the bed to sit next to me while I was on the computer and their walking on the pad caused bits of foam to come out where their nails had been. They didn’t intentionally scratch or dig the pad they were just moving about naturally.

The mattress pad does make our bed slightly more comfortable. It is just a rectangular pad, there aren’t any straps or elastic to hold the pad to your bed but if you use a fitted sheet (or a protective type mattress pad) over the top it will hold it in place.

Overall, I think its a decent mattress pad but I don’t think that it’s priced correctly. I would recommend it to those who don’t have pets or young children so they can take really great care of it, and I would recommend to watch for sales or discounts on it. It is in fact on sale right now, the full size being $32.89, the twin size being $25.89 and at those prices I think its a reasonable buy. Sale ends 7/30/2013.

In addition to mattress pads they sell quilts, bedspreads, rugs, towels, shower curtains and lots more.
