My daughter loves her snacks, just like her mama. I bake some muffins or cookies when I have time but realistically, I often fall back on ready-made snacks. Does that mean our snacks are unhealthy? Absolutely not! There are many great healthy options available now including one that I recently discovered: Funky Monkey Snacks!

What are these snacks? They are delicious freeze-dried snacks make entirely of non-GMO certified fresh fruit . The result is bite-size slices or pieces of fruit that maintain almost all nutrients and the flavor of fresh fruit! Regular dried fruit can lose over 50% of their nutrients so this is a far better option as far as nutrition is concerned. Also, fresh fruit is the ONLY ingredient (well, there are 2 flavors that contain organic cinnamon too), there is no added sugar, no preservatives, no artificial flavors or colors. Just the natural goodness of fruit!

Funky Monkey Snacks are crunchy, like chips because there is very little water left in them, rather than chewy like other dried fruits which make them interesting for kids. I used to buy dried banana slices and other fruit but they were really difficult to bite and my daughter couldn’t chew them. She also isn’t a big fan of typical dried fruit because they are very chewy and stick to her teeth. She prefers the crunch of Funky Monkey because they are both easier to bite and chew although it is a texture she needed a little time to get used to. She’s kind of picky that way. I think an older child, or a less texture-picky toddler would definitely love them ‘at first bite’!

Funky Monkey Snacks come in 7 original flavors and 5 new Marvel flavors. The original flavors are:

• Applemon: apple and organic cinnamon
• Bananamon: banana and organic cinnamon
• Canaval Mix: banana, pineapple, apple and papaya
• JiveALime: pineapple and lime juice
• MangoOJ: mango and orange juice
• Pink Pineapple: pineapple and guava
• Purple Funk: organic banana and organic açai

The Marvel flavors are:

• Mighty Bananas: bananas
• Legendary Cinnamon Apples: apples and cinnamon
• Incredible Pineapple: pinapples
• Ultimate Strawberries: strawberries
• Invincible Strawberry Bananas: strawberries and bananas

For this review, I received all 7 original flavors. I was surprised to find out each 1-ounce package of original Funky Monkey contains 3 servings of fruit (Marvel packages contain more than 1 once, therefore more than 3 servings of fruit). I like that I can just grab a package when we leave the house and I don’t have to worry about what to give my daughter if she gets hungry. It’s a very convenient yet healthy option!

Another interesting fact about Funky Monkey Snacks is that they are made in Brazil. Why? Simply because that’s where the fruit come from so they are freeze-dried and packaged at their freshest to preserve all their nutritional goodness.

Because they contain nothing but fruit (and organic cinnamon for certain flavors), Funky Monkey Snacks are great for people with allergies. They are free from the top 8 allergens including gluten, peanut/tree nuts, dairy.

Basically, with Funky Monkey Snacks, you have all the benefits of fruit but with a crunch! They are great for lunches or when you’re on the go because you don’t have to worry about bruising them. I think they’d be great for kids who don’t like to eat a lot of fruit because the chip-like texture might be more appealing to them and they’ll still get all the fruit goodness! I hope that at some point they’ll create packages of mixed fruit and veggies (maybe carrots, spinach, turnip, etc.) to make them even more balanced and packed with nutrients. I am really pleased to have discovered Funky Monkey Snacks and I have to admit I like them just as much as my daughter does!
