This little guy might appear adorable and innocent, but he has a secret – he’s a gum addict. Don’t tell anyone, but I am too. At some point, Drew recognized that I am a gum addict and learned that I always have a pack of gum  in my purse. Since he realized this 6+ months ago, I don’t believe I have seen him so much as one time without being asked for gum.

He does really well with gum, never playing with it or swallowing it instead of spitting it out. So I don’t mind giving him gum, but I like gum that is really minty and refreshing, and Drew often finds my adult gum to be what he refers to as “too hot” (actually meaning to strong/minty). When I went to look for non-minty gum to purchase and keep in my purse for him, I found tons of child-friendly flavors that were sweet or fruity but they were also packed full of sugar. Thankfully, Drew is young enough that he still gets a lot of gratification out of doing things for himself, and he likes to copy what adults do so he enjoys brushing his teeth because it makes him feel independent. Plus, one of his favorite TV shows has a song about brushing your teeth that we sing while brushing that gets him excited about brushing. His desire for independence and love of singing  results in him really enjoying taking care of his teeth which is great but just because he enjoys brushing his teeth twice a day, doesn’t mean we should drown them in sugar all day long. I don’t want his love of gum to ruin his teeth (although he DOES look pretty cute and funny in these fake teeth – I don’t want this happening to his real ones).

Thankfully, Orbit has come out with gum for children that is sugar free! Orbit For Kids has two flavors – bubblegum flavor and strawberry banana. We were able to try out strawberry banana. Drew loves both strawberries and bananas (who doesn’t??) but I wasn’t sure how it would taste considering it was sugar free. I kept a pack in my purse until I ran into Drew and he asked for gum. I opened the pack and the super sweet smell took over. It smelled GREAT! I handed him a piece and he knew the wrapper was different so he asked if it was “hot or cold” (minty or not) and I told him it was cold, and that it tasted like strawberries and bananas. He paused for a second, and gave me a grin like he thought I was kidding. He popped the piece into his mouth and chewed for a second before exclaiming “Nanas! Nana gum!”. He was clearly excited by the flavor so I decided to try a piece for myself and sure enough, it tasted like bananas, except in a sweeter, slightly “candy-like” way. It really tasted great and I never would have guessed that it was sugar free based on the flavor alone. I’m not sure why I tend to worry that sugar-free products won’t taste as good as the “regular” stuff – but this gum tastes great!

Before I left that day, Drew asked me for two extra pieces. He had never done this before, so I took it as a sign that he really enjoyed the flavor. The scent is really strong and it makes my entire purse smell good! I am all about being frugal, so I love that this super yummy, sugar free gum falls right in the middle price wise, having a suggested retail price of $1.29 per 14 pack. So, I don’t have to feel bad if I sneak a piece myself – I have to agree that it tastes great!
