*I was sent products from Petco in exchange for this post. All opinions are my own.
As I’ve mentioned before, we got two dogs last month. Even if you just get one dog, there are a lot of products to buy ahead of time. A kennel, food, food and water bowls, collars, shampoo and treats are the bare minimum. Most of us want to also get our dogs a bed and bones or toys as well. We got our dogs directly from their previous owner and she was generous by giving us the kennel, blanket and food storage container that she had used for them but we still had a lot of other items to get.
Petco is the perfect place to go if you’re getting a new pet because you can buy everything you need at one place. Petco sent me an assortment of goodies to try out with my dogs for review.
The petco brand collars have a really nice feel to them and they have a slider which helps hold the layers together where the collar overlaps. I love the slider because collars without them tend to gap and can catch on objects in the environment like knobs or handles on cupboards or drawers. These are both a size large and they range from 18 to 26 inches so they are too big for my pugs but they are nice collars.
We were also sent two Petco brand toys. The ship is from their Rugged play line – Petco seperates their toys based on type of play including rugged, natural instincts, healthy teeth & jaws, snuggling, learning, and together time. I love that they have this system to help assist you in getting a toy that is designed to be used in the way your dog likes to play. When shaken, the ship makes a noise that isn’t a squeak but I’m not sure how to best describe it. It’s almost a “gully gully” type sound. The noise scares Beans who is very sensitive to noises of all kinds. Frank isn’t afraid of it but doesn’t seem interested – but we have yet to find a toy that either of them will play with aside from treat or kibble dispensing toys, so they are definitely finicky dogs. I’m sure that for toy-loving dogs it would be tons of fun though I would think it’d be best for larger dogs as I don’t think my dogs are big enough to fit it in their mouth completely (like to carry it around).
The other toy that we were sent is designed to let you play with your pup. It’s a blue cone with two bright green rings. We tried tossing the rings to see if the dogs would be interested but they didn’t seem to be. Again, I think my finicky dogs are at fault, not the product. When you first get a new pet, it takes some trial and error to figure out what they do and don’t like and Petco has a huge selection of products to choose from while you’re figuring out your pets personality. The great thing about toys is they can always be donated to local shelters if your dogs don’t care for them.
Last but not least, we were sent Burt’s Bees Hypoallergenic Shampoo with Shea Butter & honey. Since we first got him, Frank has had behaviors (excessive licking but especially on his paws as well as paw-biting, and scratching) that are symptoms of an allergy. We aren’t sure what he is allergic to but Pugs are commonly allergic to grains in their food. So we are trying different brands of grain-free foods but I also want to keep an eye on what products we use on him to make sure he isn’t allergic to shampoos, for example. So having a hypoallergenic option to use on him just makes me feel better about bathing him. While I think it’s most likely that Frank’s decrease in symptoms has been related to switching his food, his allergy symptom behaviors have decreased immensely, even after bathing him with the shampoo so I believe that the shampoo has been successful in not causing him allergies or discomfort in any way. Plus, his fur felt great and his skin didn’t appear red or irritated. The regular price for this at Petco is $12.99 but the 16oz bottle will definitely last me a while.

Oh those toys are so cute!! I wish we could get something like that for my dog. Seriously. My pup would have those all torn to shreds within 20 minutes. He’s a pit bull/chocolate lab mix.

I kept all my dog things from when I had Yorkies so I’ll most likely get small dogs again. If I have to transport some strays, I have the equipment. I’d get all new toys though and I love the steam ship Petco toy here.
And we are in the market for a dog, and there was a large Petco presence at Union Sq at the animal fair last Saturday! I am happy to know I can get all I need there!
thanks,
Mitch
