*I was sent collars & leashes from Dog-E-Glow in return for this blog post. All opinions are my own.

My pugs are pretty much my shadow. They are at my heels all day long. So me being a night owl means they stay up late with me and need to go outside at least once, sometimes two or three times while it’s dark. We have a yard light but it doesn’t light up a very big area and when they get where I can’t see them at all it scares me a little bit. They stay in the yard well, so my fear is a bit silly I suppose but when I heard of Dog-E-Glow collars and leashes that light up, I thought they’d be the perfect way to ease my mind.

The light up collars come in two sizes, medium which fits neck sizes 10-14 inches and large which fits 15-21 inch necks. Both of my dogs have neck sizes that fall between 14 and 15 inches, so I got a medium for Beans, my smaller dog (whose neck is just 14″) and the large size for Frank whose neck is just under 15 inches.

Both dogs could have fit into the medium size easily, but we just use their collars to hold their ID tags, we use harnesses if we use a leash so it’s not a big deal that Frank’s collar is loose. Beans should just barely fit into her collar but it overlaps for about 3 inches so I think they will fit a wider range of sizes than they advertise which is nice for pets who are on the boarderline between sizes.

The light color varies depending on the color of collar that you go with – beans is pink while Frank’s looks blue. Beans has shorter hair and her collar is really visible at night. Frank’s neck hair is longer so his hair covers his a bit but I can still see him well.

The collars have an on/off switch as well as a button that you can push once to turn on, a second time to make it flash off and on, and a third time to turn it back off. I wish that there was only the on/off switch because my dogs accidentally trip the button while scratching sometimes. If you use the switch, the button can’t turn it on so we should have used that instead of the button but we didn’t realize that early on and the batteries died within about 3 weeks of usage from accidentally being turned on at night while we were sleeping and waking up to it having been on all night. Beans’ collar quit lighting up all together, and Franks had gotten really dim.  Seems how Beans’ quit working in the first 90 days, it is under warranty and qualifies for being replaced by the company, as they stand behind their products. The collars do come with extra batteries which is really convenient. Now that we have learned to always turn the collars off with the off switch, I expect this set of batteries will last much longer.

While the collars are nice for night time potty trips outside, they’d also be really nice for night time walks (we walk during the day only). If you take walks while it’s dark, using the light up leashes would make you even more visible to oncoming cars – keeping both you & your dogs a bit safer. Seems how we don’t use the collars, we donated the ones we were sent to our local humane society.
