Staying within budget during December is hard for most of us. One of the best ways to keep finances under control is to pay for some gifts early. Yet, storing all of those gifts until the holidays get here can be hard too. I love shopping at Kmart for the holidays because of their free (through 11/23) layaway program. It lets you shop for gifts and pay for them a little at a time, and then pick them up in time for the holidays. Most people set up an 8 week Kmart layaway contract and make payments every 2 weeks so now is the perfect time to set one up for Christmas.

@Kmart has tons of gifts for the whole family – including baby gear, toys, clothing and electronics. So you can get just about everything on your list all in one place. You can even add holiday decorations to your layaway – need a new tree? Ornaments? Stockings? You can even add on household or family gifts (A new TV? Slow cooker? Video game console?) to your layaway plan.

Spacing out your payments over 8 or 12 (Depending on your contract) weeks can make the financial burden a lot easier, but not having to worry about storing gifts for so long might protect sneaky kids (or adults!) from finding their gifts too early. I live about 30 minutes from a Kmart, so I am happy to drive there once or twice for Christmas shopping, but I wouldn’t want to go there every 2 weeks to make my Layaway payments so I love that you can just pay online instead. I love the Shop Your Way program at Kmart because I earn points back on purchases – and signing up for a Layaway contract can make you qualify for extra points!

Are you planning to use Kmart Layaway this year? Or are there any items from Kmart that are on your personal wish list?

My daughter uses the layaway at kmart each year. I don’t due to only getting paid once a month on a pension. It has saved her time and it was easier to layaway a few big items for the kids while making a payment each week.

  • I love that layaway makes storing the gifts until Christmas easier. Nice option when you have curious children!

  • I could use every bit of help with this year’s christmas shopping. and I think the layway sounds like a very smart idea to shop by staying in budget.

While I’m happy there’s been a resurgence in layaway plans for the holidays, I really wish more stores would offer it year round. Layaway is how I was taught to budget my money, have patience, and to earn things that I wanted as a child (my parents would just buy it for me outright).
