The Pimsleur language learning program that I received is primarily audio based, with some reading involved. You listen to the words, and repeat along. I consider myself a mix of a visual and audio person, so I wasn’t sure if I’d get bored solely from listening to the words, but the program does a really good job of getting you involved. I repeated the words back, and didn’t find my mind wandering during the lessons.

The Pimsleur approach is founded on Dr. Pimsleur’s research into memory, and language learning. Based on memory principles, the Pimsleur approach of saying the word, having you repeat it, and reinforcing this word helps you remember the word at an accelerated pace. The Pimsleur approach also focuses on core vocabulary. You spend your time learning the words you’ll actually use for conversations, rather than learning useless words or phrases. Pimsleur also gives context to the vocabulary you learn, which helps your brain learn the information better.

In addition to the audio lessons, Pimsleur also has readings which go along with the lessons. When I first saw that it had readings, I immediately thought of the “readings” I’ve gotten assigned in college, which take hours. These readings are mostly just the words, or phrases you’re hearing. You read the word or phrase along with hearing how it’s pronounces, which helps to reinforce it in your brain, and also helps you learn to read the language. Very easy and simple.

I really liked that with the Pimsleur language learning program you are constantly listening to the correct pronunciations, and accent. When you learn a language in a class, you don’t always get someone who has a proper accent, or even the proper pronunciation for words. With Pimsleur you know you’re learning the language correctly the entire time.
