Since I got my pugs in July, I’ve noticed that they go through phases of scratching, licking the paws, and other allergy related behaviors. Yet, I haven’t pin pointed what it is that either or both of them are allergic to. Allergy testing is really expensive so I have tried to just pay attention to what foods and treats they do well on and that has worked great so far. One method that I use for avoiding potential allergens is sticking to foods and treats with natural ingredients and a limited number of ingredients. As far as treats go, I feel like the fewer ingredients the treats have, the better. PureBites are pet treats (yes, they can be given to cats!) that have just one ingredient per variety. For example, their turkey breast dog treats are just turkey breast, and their beef liver treats only contain beef liver, etc.
As I expected, we had no itching or other allergy symptoms while my dogs were consuming PureBites treats. While limited ingredients in treats are something I seek out for health reasons for the dogs, they also appear to be preferred more by my dogs as they act more excited when I get them out. When I stopped to think about it, it seems pretty logical that they would prefer treats that are pure chicken breast over a chicken flavored dog treat full of other stuff – they are meat lovers, after all. So these treats have really been a win-win for both me and the dogs. If you’re concerned about your dogs weight, these are great treats to keep on hand because they are all low in calories – some average 12 calories per bite, others 9, etc but they’re all quite low. They are very easy to break apart (though they do crumble a bit) so they are perfect for the tiniest of dogs and can be used as training treats, too.
They have a noticeable smell (especially the fish based ones) but it seems to just add to the excitement for my dogs. I would say that PureBites have been one of my dogs’ favorite treats that we’ve tried so far. The only downside that I found with these treats is that some of the varieties do fall apart easily so some of the bags had quite a bit of “powder” or crumbs at the bottom by the time that we got through the bag. Other varieties didn’t fall apart at all (one of them was beef liver). However, the ones that do crumble can be saved and used to top your dogs kibble with if they are sick and not eating as a way to entice them to eat so I have set it aside for that use.
Most PureBites treats are single ingredient treats but they also make trail mix which is a combination of green beans, beef liver and sweet potato but those are the only 3 ingredients included. All of the bags that we were sent were resealable so we can keep the treats fresh without having to transfer them into another container. The bags that I have left have an expiration date in 2016 so you can stock up without worrying that the treats will go bad.
My dogs really liked all of the treats that we tried from PureBites but I think their favorite was the Ocean Whitefish. I had never tried any fish based treats with them before but they just seemed really excited whenever they got near that bag in particular.

.I would have not thought that dogs would like fish, but I guess they do.
