I spent a lot of time reading about dogs in general and pugs prior to getting Frank & Beans. I knew that it’s a common problem for pet owners to not realize that they need to do anything special to care for their dogs teeth which causes tartar build up and other problems. I knew it was recommended that you brush your dogs teeth daily. I had also read that because pugs have such small mouths (As a result of their short snouts) their teeth are often crooked and crowded, increasing the odds of build up.

When I adopted Frank & Beans, they were 8 and 9 years old and they had no interest in anyone touching their face. So, opening their mouths and brushing their teeth felt practically impossible. I’m sure many dog owners have had similar experiences. It’s a lot harder to get a dog used to humans being in and around their mouth if they don’t experience it as puppies.

MilkBone Brushing Chews

MilkBone recently came out with brushing chews which are completely edible dog chews that are intentionally shaped with a lot of texture so that when your dog chews on them, they get into the various angles of their teeth to prevent or remove tartar. A study even found that if dogs are given a MilkBone brushing chew daily, that their tartar level will be similar to the tartar level of a dog whose teeth is brushed twice a week. They are not as good as daily brushing which is recommended, but I am happy to get all the help we can.

Milkbone size mini pug

I was curious how Frank & Beans would take to the brushing chews. The chews have a scent if I intentionally try to sniff them, but it is not very strong. So, I was surprised that Frank & Beans both seemed extra excited to try the brushing chews. Right now they come in two sizes, Mini which is for dogs 5-24lbs. Both of my pugs fit into this weight range so this is the best size of brushing chew for them. The mini chews are about 2 inches long. Instead of laying flat, they twist a little and the surface of the chew has bumps. The overall texture is what helps your dogs teeth get lightly scraped while chewing. If you have a bigger dog, MilkBone Brushing Chews also comes in the combined size of small/medium which is for dogs 25-74lbs.

I’m sure a lot of you have tried other dental dog chews before so I wanted to give a bit of a comparison as well. We have tried dental chews before and they were really minty smelling – MilkBone Brushing Chews just smell more like a regular dog treat. A little TMI coming up read at your own risk! I also noticed with other dental chews that my dogs would get acidic smelling breath afterwards – I am not sure if this means they gagged a little? Or maybe it just caused them to burp or have an acid-reflux like reaction to them? I am not sure but it made me uncomfortable with giving them the chews. Anyway, my dogs haven’t had acidic breath after having MilkBone Brushing Chews and I haven’t seen them gag on these at all either so I feel much better about them in comparison.

MilkBone brushing chews are available at stores where other MilkBone products are sold which includes most pet stores and supermarkets as well as online pet websites.

My dog also does not like when his teeth are brushed. He never really got use to it when he was a puppy. We just took him to the vet to get his teeth professionally cleaned and it was rather expensive. I plan on trying brush chews with him in the future to see if that helps to cut down the tartar.

Are these chews made in China? I can’t find the origin anywhere.
    Thanks

Sorry, just now saw your comment. This comment is on the Milkbone page about their products in general but they don’t seem to make more specific information available as far as these chews as opposed to their regular treats. “All Milk-Bone® Dog Biscuits and dog treats are produced at our facilities here in the U.S. The majority of ingredients are sourced from the U.S. Like most pet companies, we source a limited amount of minor ingredients, such as important nutritional supplements or preservatives, from other countries due to limited availability in the U.S. We want to assure you that our strict U.S. quality and operations standards apply equally to all of our ingredients, regardless of the country of origin.”

  • I just saw that these milk bone brushing chews do not digest and a friend of mine had to take there dog in and have sergury because it got caught in its colon and had to be taken out with massive sergury and it cost them over 1,000.00 and the poor dog has a large scar plus the paid it had to go thru. I just bought a package of 36 and paid about 10.00. Please let me know if you are refunding the payments for these.

Could you please let me know what on earth this person meant. Other than being of pox or literary skills, the comment and the answer have nothing in common. Thank you

  • It’s awesome for me to have a site, which is good in support of my know-how.
