*Mechanix sent product samples for my review. All opinions are my own.
When I get my dad gifts, I always go for practical gifts. He’s a fairly simple guy and if I get him something new and different, odds are high that he will never use it. He hates spending money on himself so he will let the items that he owns wear out completely before replacing them and tends to go for the cheapest items he can find. He’ll be 70 next year so I hate seeing him “get by” with less than quality items especially for the products that he uses on a daily or regular basis.
My dad relies on a wood stove to heat his home. This means he spends a lot of time cutting and stacking wood in the winter. Sometimes Ryan & I will go with him to cut down trees, cut the logs or stack them into piles. Even for someone my age, it’s not a fun job. My hands get cold really quickly if I don’t wear winter gloves, yet wearing big bulky gloves makes it hard to get a good grip on the pieces of wood. In the past, I would always end up smashing my finger at least once per trip by accidentally losing my grip on a piece of wood and dropping it. Nothing hurts quite like dropping a big log onto a freezing cold finger!
I realized that my dad must experience these same problems, except it probably hurts worse because of his age and arthritis. Instead of using winter gloves, he uses work gloves so that he can keep a grip on the wood but this must make his hands get extremely cold. Thinking about all of this made me wonder if there was such a thing as winter work gloves. I got looking around online and came across Mechanix which is a brand that makes all kinds of work gloves, including a cold weather line!
I was sent the Mechanix Winter Armor and Fleece Utility work gloves. They are available in sizes small through XXL. If you aren’t sure which size is best for you, there is a printable size chart available on the Mechanix website. You print it at full size and then lay your hand on the chart to determine your size.
The fleece utility work gloves are rated for temps as low as 32 degrees, making them ideal for fall or early winter working here in Michigan. . The fleece utility work gloves are lined with a layer of thin fleece to keep you warm and the outside has a rubberized palm and fingertips, making them ideal for cutting and stacking wood or dozens of other cold-weather jobs.
The winter armor gloves have thinsulate insulation to keep you warm. They have fabric on the thumb and index finger that allow you to use touchscreen devices like smartphones or tablets with the gloves on. The knuckles have a thin layer of padding to help protect you from impact (like dropping a piece of wood on your finger!). Yet, the padding is thin enough that even when I try these on (and they are too large for me because I ordered them to fit my dad) the padding isn’t thick enough to cause resistance when I’m bending my fingers because the padding is thin and broken into thin strips along the fingers. The palms have water-resistant grip panels to help you hold onto tools or whatever else you are holding. There is a velcro panel across the wrist so you can tighten it for the perfect fit.
I think my dad will find both of these Mechanix gloves to be perfect for working outdoors through the fall and winter. The Mechanix site is offering free ground shipping now through the end of the year. You can find Mechanix gloves in stores like Lowes, Walmart, Autozone and other auto-parts stores.

These would be perfect for my dad. He is a retired engineer and still does so many things in the garage and outside in the cold Ohio weather.
Awesome review, this would be great for my step-dad.
