The winter after we graduated high school, I had the same discussion with several of my friends. We all seemed to get sick and none of my friends were prepared. Some had forgotten to pack items that they would want during sickness when they moved to college. Others were in their own apartment for the first time and had never been sick without a parent around to help them out. I think young adults to head of to college are particularly prone to getting sick – the combination of stress, lack of sleep and going into buildings were dozens or even hundreds of other people congrats (and spread germs!) just isn’t a good combination.
Getting sick at college doesn’t have to be a disaster if you’re prepared ahead of time. I would suggest making a “sick survival kit” to keep in your dorm or apartment so that you’re ready to fight back when the germs try to take over. This would also be a super useful gift idea for a student heading off to college!
You’ll need:
- Soup, crackers or other easy-on-the-belly foods that you can cook in your dorm.
- Bottled Water
- Nyquil Severe Cold & Flu (more details below).
- No personal bathroom? Include a large bowl or small trash can.
- Tissues
- Heating pad
- Wash Cloth
- Comfy PJs
- A bin or container to hold it all in.
The reason I suggest DayQuil & NyQuil Severe is because they contain the maximum amount of symptom-relieving ingredients. They fight so many symptoms that you can keep fewer medications on-hand while being prepared for a variety of symptoms. Less clutter means more space which is a huge benefit whether you’re in a dorm or an apartment. The NyQuil Severe will help you get a good nights rest while still fighting your illness with a decongestant. When I’m sick, being unable to breath easily makes it so much more frustrating so a decongestant is a must for me. Walmart offers a two-in-one pack of DayQuil and NyQuil Severe in both liquid and capsule forms, and they have great prices on other sickness essentials.
NyQuil Severe can help relieve these symptoms:
- Nasal Congestion
- Sinus congestion & pressure
- Cough
- Minor aches and pains
- Headache
- Fever
- Sore throat
- Runny nose and sneezing
- Reduces swelling of nasal passages
- Temporarily restores freer breathing through the nose
- Promotes nasal & sinus draining

care packages were the best in college! id throw some homemade cookies and get a bigger box because no matter how old you are, you always want your mom when youre sick! 🙂

It is so true that we forget about sending items a person would need when sick. I don’t think I remember sending anything other than a bottle if ibuprofen. This is a great idea to send them off with!

That would have been the perfect kit to have when I was in college, the winters could be so rough.

This is a brilliant idea for any college kid! Thanks for the inspiration!

I’m a nurse and when I’m sick I just want to wash my hands all the time from blowing my nose (yuck germs) so I would include some alcohol-based gel to keep the cooties at bay. That stuff is so inexpensive and I like the kind with softeners in it too so it’s not so drying.

I love this idea. This is a great way to show you care. So maany college kids have no idea what to take or what works best for them. I know a few who would appreciate something like this!

What a great idea, I have a nephew in college, will share this with him!

This is a perfect care package for the students because colds and flu seem to pop up as soon as school starts.

What a grand kit boy how I would have loved to have this delivered to me when I was in CC.! 🙂

This is great! My niece starts college next week and I’m trying to figure out care packages to send, I’ll definitely be making one of these when the weather starts getting cold!

This should be a must on anyone who is sending their child off to college, Too many germs out their.
So clever for a care package because colds and flu seem to pop up more right when school starts. I’ll have to save this idea for my brother when he goes away to college.
