When I first moved out on my own and started doing my own laundry, it took a while to create an effective laundry system. Ryan has sensitive skin, so many cheap laundry detergents cause him to break out in a rash. While trying out cheap laundry detergents, I found that many weren’t effective at removing stains, making my clothing smell nice, and leaving them feeling fresh and clean. Other detergents seemed to work but they were harsh on our clothing, making them quickly lose their vibrant colors.

Laundry Routine ideas - 6 tips for creating a clothes washing routine that is effective

Here are my 6 tips for creating an effective laundry system:

1. Set up a laundry schedule, including a back-up day to prevent any clothing from going long periods of time without being washed. An example laundry schedule:

  • Tuesday – Adult laundry  + all towels
  • Thursday – Kids laundry + all bedding
  • Sunday – Back up laundry day if you fell behind on Tuesday or Thursday.

2. Utilize your washing machine options. I used to always use the same settings for each load, but taking advantage of the settings can make a difference in how clean your clothing gets, without over-working your light or gentle loads. I adjust my settings to reflect how sturdy the load is, how full the machine is and how dirty the clothing is. This allows me to get my super dirty laundry clean without wasting water and resources on the more gentle or lightly dirty laundry loads.

3.  Use a detergent that has a long lasting scent. It’s not always the detergents that smell the strongest that will retain smell the longest. I’ve been using method laundry detergent for a few years because it the scent isn’t overwhelming but it stays on my clothing for a long time. If I wash clothing and leave them in my dresser for a week before wearing them, the clothing will still have the detergent scent when I’m putting them on.

4. Use a detergent that is effective on a variety of laundry. I use the method brand is because their detergent is 4x or 8x concentrated (depending on which variety you purchase), so I don’t have to use much per load but it’s great at getting my clothes clean and removing stains. I can use it on my colors and whites, plus I can use it pre-wash to remove stains. It uses a biodegradable and hypoallergenic formula that doesn’t irritate Ryan’s sensitive skin. I am able to use it on all of our laundry instead of having a whole line of laundry products cluttering up my home.

5. Separate each piece of clothing when you transfer to the dryer. If you throw the wet clothing into the dryer in a big tangled ball, it won’t start being dried effectively until the dryer untangles the clothing. When I switch my laundry over I grab each clothing article separately to ensure that each item is loose from other clothing so it can start being dried right away.

6. Use reusable dryer balls to help your clothing stay separated while drying, allowing your clothing to dry sooner and save energy.
