Thank you to Mittencrate for sending a product in exchange for review purposes. All opinions belong to me!
Because I live in Michigan I think its easy to forget how much we as a state, really stand out on the map. And when you are living in a small town its even easier to not notice how much is going on around you in bigger cities! Mitten Crate has made a solution for just that!
These are some of the reasons I appreciate a state based subscription box! Given that Michigan is my home state I have a bit of a bias on being really interested in finding cool little companies that are near me or just based in Michigan. Kind of like when you see someone from your state on T.V.? It’s like that but better because its food, that you can share with others, and in turn help out your local community. Not to mention if you ever move out of state, there’s your little bit of homesickness cured with a few snacks! While these are some awesome reasons to like this company I think one thing that really makes you feel good about giving back to the community is with every purchase, Mitten crate donates to Gleaners community food bank of southeastern Michigan. So your money is no longer only being spent for your pleasure alone but helping others in need.
I received a Mitten Crate for review. The products in this box were so unique and tasty. The chefs cut turkey jerky, I really liked. It had a super tender moistness unlike the weird waxy stuff you get from the gas station! The salt and pepper roasted lentils weren’t something that I really enjoyed but my 3 year old loves them! As for the bbq chips, those were eaten right away. The cherry butter is so amazing on toast in the morning, which is saying something since I try to keep most breads out of the house, but its worth breaking this rule for. I have only ever had apple butter previous to this and I really enjoyed getting to try another variety! I don’t drink coffee so I did give the vita perks to a coffee lover friend of mine. She said the flavors weren’t wrong but the vitamin taste was, but also that it was a good trade off given that she was receiving the vitamins she was most likely missing from skipping breakfast! Easily hands down my favorite thing in this box was the dark chocolate cherry toffee. I have never liked peanut brittle or toffee growing up, and now I’m wondering was I just being exposed to low quality varieties!? Because this stuff was amazing, like hand my husband the smaller piece even though it’s not fair, amazing. Don’t act like you haven’t ever done it!
After eating all the snacks (which didn’t take long) I found myself trying to determine the value of the products and the cost of the box (which is $35 per month). The conclusion I had come to at first was “Yup, this is Michigan, toffee or fudge and some chips” but then I thought “Oh, yeah! This is a subscription box, next month will be all new locally made products, that may or may not be in the same categories”. How cool that you get to continually learn more about the food business in your home state without doing all the traveling! And if you love it, now you know where to find it!
I am a stay at home mother of two, who loves to create in every form, from cooking, to henna, to painting or sculpting, creating with my hands is my passion! I love to dance and let loose when the music flows right. Being outside is a special kind of therapy I think humans need more of as well as mindfulness! I love all things new and adventurous and am always looking to experience more of life 🙂

My uncle still lives in Michigan and I worked a summer at Mackinaw Island, so I know the fudge and toffee candies do taste good. I love learning about all the subscription boxes and home state boxes would be a good idea too. Another new one I saw today was a Christian based box, another great idea someone brought to reality.
