The “bars” section of any grocery store can be overwhelming if you aren’t sure what your nutritional goals are. A few months ago my boyfriend & I started paying attention to what we ate. We both had been raised with just the basic knowledge of nutrition such as fruits and veggies are “good”, meat and dairy products are pretty good and sugary treats are “bad”. A few months ago we decided to work on eating better and exercise in an attempt to lose weight while also just getting healthier. We knew we needed to count calories because that’s the most important aspect of losing weight. We also learned that protein and fiber are both aspects of nutrition that help you stay fuller, longer so choosing calorie sources that have fiber and protein is a good way to avoid hunger and increase your odds of being successful at staying within your calorie limit.
Atkins is known for their carb-counting diet and we aren’t counting carbs. I was interested in the Atkins Harvest Trail bars because of their high fiber, high protein and low sugar nutritional profile. The bars come in four varieties – Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Caramel, Vanilla Fruit & Nut, Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter, and Dark Chocolate Cherry & Nuts. The nutritional panel for the bars vary slightly, but all of them are low in sugar while being high in fiber and protein. They are also a good source of healthy fats. The dark chocolate sea salt caramel bars have 14g of fat, 75% of which is sourced from peanuts and almonds. None of the bars have artificial colors, flavors, preservatives or sugar alcohol.
The bars are a bit higher in calories than many snack bars (around 180 calories) but I don’t mind spending those calories because I know they are a good source of nutrition. I have been using these bars as somewhat of a meal replacement when I am working and too busy to stop and eat. The once I have time to stop for a while I’ll add on a healthy snack like yogurt, a cheese stick, a salad or some fruit and will consider the bar + my snacks as a meal. The bars are satisfying because of the protein and fiber and them being individually packaged makes them really convenient so I can throw one in my purse and eat on the go or while working at my computer. We liked each of the varieties but my favorite was the fruit & nuts bar while Ryan’s was the dark chocolate cherry & nuts.
Atkins Harvest Trail bars are just entering stores now, and should be widely available in grocery stores by the end of October. The suggested price per box is $6.48 which includes 5 bars.

I tried a free Atkins bar from their site and these look good as well. That’s a pretty fair price considering the price of nuts. I eat a ton of fiber for my IBS. If I manage my diet and exercise like I should, I don’t need to take meds. It’s a challenge though.
