Golly Gear sent me two dog sweaters for my review. All opinions are my own.

I adore my pugs but finding products that fit them is a lot harder than most may think. They’re small dogs but they have unique body proportions when compared to other dogs of the same weight class. They tend to be short and stocky with big front shoulders/chests. They usually have big necks that are similar in width to their head.  Most other dog breeds have heads that are much wider than their necks, so a collar can’t slip over their head which isn’t true for pugs so they need to wear harnesses instead of collars.

Pugs also have large chest/shoulder sizes for how short their backs are, which is problematic for sweaters and coats. I’ve tried many dog sweaters before and if I purchase ones that fit well in length they are too narrow through the chest/shoulders. If I purchase a sweater that fits them around the chest, the sweaters are far too long.

I was excited to discover Golly Gear, a website that specializes in products for smaller dog breads. They even have a products for pugs category that included sweaters that come in “barrel chested” sizes. Barrel chested is a term that refers to dogs like pugs and bulldogs who have wide shoulders compared to their length and backside. The size chart includes a girth measurement and a length measurement. Beans has a 13″ back (From collar to the top of her tail) while Frank has a 14.5 inch back. Beans has a 22 inch girth size while Frank has a 24.5 inch girth size. The 12BC sweater is made for dogs who are 12 inches long (or more) and who have a chest size of 22 inches – this was exactly beans’ measurements so I knew that size would be perfect for her. The 14BC size chart is for dogs 15+ inches long and who have a girth of 24 inches. I thought this would work for Frank around but that it would be a little long. When the sweaters came they both fit exactly as I expected – Beans’ was perfect while Frank’s was a little too long but not so long that it caused any trouble.

The sweaters have two leg holes and then a velcro strip that runs down the dogs back. TO put them on you simply put both of their front paws through the holes, pull the sweater over their sides and then stick the velcro down their spine. The sweaters are completely machine washable so if it gets muddy or accidentally gets peed on (which is a problem for boy dogs with sweaters that are a bit too long on their belly) they can just be thrown in the washer and dryer.

My dogs love being outside with us, going for walks and exploring and their Fido Fleece sweaters from Golly Gear has allowed us to keep them outside with us even as the weather has gotten colder.
