I received product from Mountain House for my review. All opinions and photos are my own.

I live in Oregon. For as long as I can remember, we have been told that we are due for a big earthquake.  Each year that goes by without “the big one” I wonder if it will happen next year. Now that I have a family, I feel that it is my duty to make sure we are prepared for “the big one” or any other disaster.

FEMA suggest you build an emergency preparedness kit to fit your family needs. Their list has many obvious items, but also has several things I never would have thought of. I have printed off their list and am building a kit along with my family. This way, everyone knows what items we have ready, where they are, and our plans.

Our kit has Mountain House freeze dried meals. For my review, I received a Just In Case Essential Assortment Bucket. This kit includes four pouches of each: Rice & Chicken, Chili Mack with Beef, and Spaghetti with Meat Sauce. With these twelve pouches, I can make 32 servings of food.

Mountain House has made it a priority to make meals that are of high quality and taste great. They want your meal to comfort you, whether you are on an extreme adventure or going through a disaster. They even offer you a Taste Guarantee.

How long will Mountain House pouches last? Mountain House suggests you store your pouches unopened and below 75 degrees to maximize shelf life. If you store you pouches properly, they will last 12+ years. They have actually tested products after being stored for 30 years and said the meal was still delicious!

If you are looking for something to last longer than 12+ years, Mountain House says their canned goods have a shelf life of 25+ years. (Check website for more details about shelf life of all products.)

I have a plastic bucket of dehydrated foods since I live in earthquake country also (L.A.) Good to know they last so long, even in the heat. I’ve never tried freeze dried foods before though.

Mountain High pouches have a shelf life of 30 years and their canned goods have a shelf life of 25+ years? These products should definitely be in everyone’s emergency preparedness kit. Thank you for sharing this review.

  • Crazy the shelf life on these things! Definitely great for being prepared though!

  • I noticed your really didn’t review this product. how does it taste? How is it Packaged? What is the serving size? How many calories are in each serving? Does it rehydrate in cold water? Honestly you don’t tell us much about the product. I recommend you eating one serving size and trying to live off of it for a full 8 hours. I will tell you that each package has around 2-300 calories per serving and each package is 2.5 servings. Most of MH recipes are fantastic but don’t rehydrate well in cold water so you better have a stove or fuel source around. This kit will only last about 3 days for 2 people.

  • It has been suggested from our Congregation that it might be a Good thing for us to have a Backpack Ready with Clothes Shoes and Necessary items Packed and Ready to Go. It seems that there are Emergencies happening all the time. This looks like it may be a Good thing for us to Include in that Backpack.
