Pugs are prone to a variety of eye diseases and problems. Their eyes stick out of their head further than most other dog breeds do, which is the main cause of these issues. They are likely to struggle with dry-eye because their eyes often stay slightly open while they are sleeping. Pugs are more likely to get their eyes scratched or damaged because they stick out. They are also prone to corneal ulcers, inflammation, and eye discharge.

Those pug puppy dog eyes are cute but they need to be cared for - come find out how I care for my pugs eyes.

There is no quick and easy way to prevent your pug from developing all of these issues. So how do I care for my pugs eyes?

  1. I make sure my dogs have yearly exams to catch any problems.
  2. I take notice if they try to scratch or rub their eyes. If yours does, it’s time to go in and see what’s going on.
  3. I only use collars for holding their ID tags. I never put them on a leash attached to their collar. Pugs eyes can actually prolapse if a leash is used to tug their collar too tightly or at the right angle. The first time I read this I thought it was an internet myth but it is apparently true. Eye-issue aside, it’s best to use a harness on pugs because they are prone to breathing issues as-is so avoiding restricting their neck in any way is a good idea.
  4. Proactively prevent dry eye with regular eye drop treatment. Keeping a pugs eyes moisturized is great for treating dry eye and having moisturized eyes can reduce the risk of irritation and inflammation.

On my pugs I have been using Bayer® ExpertCareTM Dog Eye Lubricant Drops which are available exclusively at PetSmart and specially formulated for dogs. The PetSmart store layout makes it quick and easy for me to find the over the health and wellness section. Bayer ExpertCare products are labeled based on usage making it quick and easy to choose what you need, such as eye lubricant drops or moisturizing dog shampoo.

Bayer ExpertCare Eye Drops

Bayer ExpertCare Dog Eye Lubricant Drops support moisture and lubrication in your dogs eyes and are specifically formulated with cross-linked, modified hydronic acid to minimize potential dryness and irritation.

I adopted my pugs when they were 8 and 9 years old, and I have no idea if their previous owner used eye drops with them. I remember being a bit worried that they might really struggle with accepting eye drops but mine tolerate it fairly well. I wouldn’t say that they like getting eye drops but they have never fought it badly and after treating them for getting eye drops they didn’t struggle with it at all.

Bayer ExpertCare

I’ve been using these Bayer ExpertCare drops on my pugs for a few weeks and they have had no issues with irritation since we began using this line. My pugs will both wake up with thick eye discharge if they sleep overnight without eye drops so I use these before we go to bed and they seem to reduce the thickness of their eye discharge.

The bottle that you get is very small but you only use 1-2 drops per eye each day so I can’t really tell that any has been used from my bottle yet and it will last a long time.

Thanks for the review. I’m curious as to if my dogs would benefit from these, but i don’t see them hinting that their eyes are bothering them

Watch them playing or being too excited, their eyes can pop out then also. I always worry about my Pug’s eyes. I did not know they had these drops, I have to check them out.

Yes, dogs are just like kids — a lot of care and love. Thanks for the review, I’d check it for my dog.

It seems certtain purbreds have their own particular problems. I knew pugs had eye problems and they could prolapse easily. I had aa chow who had to have eye surgery as he eyelids were rolling inwards. Most people dont know this but chows who might appear mean generally arent after the surgery if thats whats bothering them! Their eyes hurt, and some are in terrible pain or going blind.

thanks for the info I will have to shop our local store for the Bayer product, I was shocked to see Bullit’s eye all red and bulging out so much, I am taking care of him for my grandkids, since they can’t have a dog in their rental.

I use puralube vet ointment. 8 bucks on Amazon. My vet used to charge 30 for a prescription the same size. My dog has had eye issues since six weeks old, so he’s used to it.

The dark spots on their eyes is called pigmentary keratitis. You may notice your dog nipping at the flutters & Spots in the air.

My 14-year-old pug was diagnosed at Norwalk veterinary Eye clinic in 2005. He was prescribed an ointment called tacrolimus which can come in and eyedrop form or a cream. Being how strong & squirmy my Duke was we opted for the eyedrops. To the very last day when I had him he would demand a treat every time he was a good boy for the eyedrops. 😉

“”Tacrolimus is one of a group of relatively new drugs used to treat dry eye in dogs and cats. The veterinary term for dry eye is keratoconjunctivitis sicca or KCS. It is seen more commonly in dogs than in cats. Cyclosporine and tacrolimus are the two drugs most commonly used to stimulate tear production”” – Wedgewood Pet rx Site

“”Veterinary Drugs — Tacrolimus Eye Drops
Tacrolimus is an anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive drug, often prescribed in veterinary medicine for the ophthalmic treatment of KCS. The ophthalmic drops work to stimulate the tear glands and prevent further destruction of tissue. Some animals with KCS resulting from abnormal activity of the immune system may need to undergo Tacrolimus therapy throughout life.”” – diamondbackdrugs.com

Oh Emily, Thank you for this post. We have an usually small Frenchie whose body is shaped like a pug and she has the coloring of allot of puggers fur babies. We took her to the Vet today because of a problem with one of her eyes. I started doing research and found your post. I realize that Bridget’s eye problem stems from a dry eye condition. Again, thank you.
