A lot of us have a tendency to neglect or just forget about our eyes. Even people who are very health conscience in general can slack on eye care. Recently, Think About Your Eyes surveyed members of a national fitness center chain (Life Time Fitness) and found that the gym members neglected their eyes despite being very health conscious in regards to their weight and health otherwise. In fact, they were 24% more likely to exercise 3+ times per week than they were to get a yearly eye exam! I knew that some people slack on getting their annual exam, but I wouldn’t have guessed that people who are otherwise health conscious would be so likely to skip or forget their eye exam.
Getting a yearly comprehensive eye exam is recommended for all people, whether you currently wear glasses or contacts or not. Just like other muscles, eyes need regular care to maintain maximum performance.
Getting a yearly exam increases the odds of catching any eye problems early. When eye problems are caught earlier they can be easier to treat. Check out the infographic below for more information on eye health.
My school provided basic eye exams when I was a child. They were really basic exams that just attempted to determine if there was a potential need for glasses. One year I failed the exam at school so my mom took me to an eye doctor for the first time shortly after, when I was 12. I had not realized that I wasn’t seeing well. When I went in to see an eye doctor, it was determined that I did need glasses and since then I have really realized the importance of a yearly eye exam.
Dancing with my dad at my brother’s wedding, a few weeks after getting my first pair of glasses.
Even though I have now worn glasses for about 12-13 years, I still don’t always notice when my script needs updated. Sometimes I go in for my yearly exam thinking my glasses will be good for another year, only to learn that my prescription has changed! Other times I go into the exam expecting new glasses and my script is still accurate. This experience has made me realize that I can’t always tell how perfect (or imperfect) my vision is, and I assume others might experience the same thing. Even if you have never needed vision correction and don’t feel that your vision clarity has decreased, it’s possible that it has. Also, eye exams aren’t just about whether or not you need glasses. Comprehensive eye exams can detect diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke.
As someone who needs to wear glasses full-time, I love having transitional lenses because they work as regular glasses and sunglasses.

I’ve been wearing glasses since I was 10 years old. I am very good about getting my eyes checked and my children’s eyes checked every year. My husband on the other hand….he’s not so diligent!

I’ve worn glasses since I was 3.5 years old! The eye problem occured to me and both my sisters at the same age. When I had kids, I knew how important an eye exam was. I got them tested the day they turned three and we go every year! They love the experience!

I make sure to get my eyes checked every year. It was many years ago that I had stopped going in, but just a few years ago I started going again. I’ll always go each year now and I’ll never skip out again.

This post is a very good reminder to take care of the windows of our soul. Our eyes are more strain during this generation because of too much screen time. It’s best to have them check each year.

I think about my eyes now that I have been having problems. I can’t get behind the wheels without wearing my prescription eyeglasses.

I had lasix surgery 16 years ago and still only need reading glasses now and then. I did however, have to overcome severe dry eye syndrome, suffering for years, but finally improved. I do not take good vision for granted at all and preach as a nurse, to take care of your eyes always.

This year my granddaughter was seated in the back of the class for the first time and was having a difficult time seeing the board,we were surprised to find she needed glasses full time. Now that she has them she hates taking them off because not only can she see better but colours are bright and beautiful now.
I used to need glasses as a kid but hated them so never wore them and eventually lost them on purpose :/ After then I haven’t had any and I guess hadn’t really considered if I still needed them!! Maybe its time for a check up!!
