It’s our first spring in our new house. We are excited to FINALLY have the room for a large family garden. My husband and I want to grow a large variety of fruits and vegetables. Our goal is to not only have healthy all-natural produce, but to also use this as a learning experience for our two young daughters. We want them to understand where food comes from. We want them to experience the hard work that goes into having a garden and then seeing/tasting the rewards of their work.

To prepare for our garden, our neighbor helped us till the ground. The area we are using was previously home to three horses. Because horse manure is hot, we added lime to the soil. We ended up tilling the ground three times to make sure it was mixed and aerated.

Next, I purchased an assortment of heirloom garden seeds. I took some of the garden soil and used egg cartons and recycled plant containers to plant our garden starts.

To keep our garden starts clearly labeled, I used Metal Garden Markers. Metal Garden Markers make it easy to know what you are growing. They come in two pieces- a metal plate and galvanized steel wires. The plates can easily be written on with a paint marker or pencil. While my plants are still in containers, I am using the metal plates for identification. When I move my starts to the garden, I will slip the plate onto the wire and secure it into the ground. As our garden grows, we will be able to know what we are growing.
