My two young daughters (ages 7 and 9 years old) love watching home improvement shows with me. They enjoy seeing all the different projects and decorating ideas.
Recently we saw a show where furniture was being transformed with chalk paint. The girls were inspired. They asked if they could paint their desks with chalk paint. I reached out to Rust-Oleum and they said they would be happy to send the girls Chalked Ultra Matte Paint and Matte Clear Protective Topcoat for their project.
Savannah’s bedroom has green walls. She has painted fun little murals around her bedroom. She decided that the Aged Gray paint color would best compliment her bedroom.
Cheyenne’s bedroom walls are primarily white. On top of that, she painted colorful blocks all around her room. She wanted Serenity Blue paint for her furniture makeover project.
To begin, we moved the girls’ desks down to our basement. Then they gave their desks and chairs a good cleaning. Next, they brushed on two coats of Chalked Ultra Matte Paint. We let each coat dry for at least an hour in between. After the second coat of paint, we let the desks dry over night. The next day, the girls applied a coat of Matte Clear Protective Topcoat. It was a muggy day so we let the desks dry for a full day before we moved them back to their bedrooms.
This was a really fun and easy project! I didn’t help the girls in any way. They did it completely on their own. I wanted to get in on the fun, but they insisted that it was their furniture and their project.
My daughters are so happy with their results, they have asked to paint their dressers with the remaining Chalked Ultra Matte Paint. I look forward to seeing the end results.

Hello, my name is Laurie. My family and I live near the Oregon coast. When we aren’t at work, in school, or on the volleyball court, we enjoy traveling, cheering for our favorite sports teams, playing outdoors, and checking off items on our bucket list. We are lucky in that both sets of our parents, as well as our siblings and their families, live within an hour of us. We get together often to help one another out, celebrate milestones, and go on adventures together.
