Do you get gel nails? I haven’t tried them yet, but I’ve been wanting to for a few months. I first learned about gel manicures from a YouTube channel that I follow. I liked the finished look and she was raving about how quickly they dried, and how long they lasted. I’ve heard many people say that gel manicures can last for up to three weeks! I’m not very careful and I don’t have a dishwasher so my nail polish is usually pretty chipped by day 3 or 4.

Recently, I found out one drawback to having gel manicures. The light that cures the gel uses UV rays. In the amount of time that it takes your gel polish to dry, your hands have been exposed to the equivalent of 21-40 minutes of sunlight. If you get gel manicures regularly, that UV exposure really adds up.

To help protect your hands from harmful UV rays while having your nails dry, YouVeeSheild created a shield that prevents the rays from getting into your skin better than gloves or sunscreen. The shield covers your hand as well as part of your wrist. It leaves the tips of your fingers out so your nails are able to be dried. The shield blocks 99% of  UV light and has qualified for UPF 50+ certification. The reflections from the glove at 364NN (UVA) are negligible for both the LED and UV lamp sources. In other words, the light isn’t “bouncing” out of the lamp because of the shield.

Do you enjoy getting a manicure? Did you know that the lamp emits UV rays that are bad for your skin? Check out the YouVeeShield website to learn more or to purchase a shield. The shields work out to less than $1 or less each, depending on how many you purchase at once. Go here to get a discount that will save you 15% on your purchase!

A great product to know about!

Wow, what a great idea for a product! I haven’t had a gel manicure yet, but have gotten my fair share of tips put on as well as regular manicures. This always requires a UV lamp to dry them, and I have never thought about the damage done to my hands because of it! Thanks for sharing! 🙂

Oooh this is very interesting! I had no idea I was even being exposed to uv rays when getting them done!!

Something I don’t have to worry about since I don’t get manicures. (plenty of other things to worry about)

I have never ever had a manicure or pedicure for that matter. I have also seen the videos about the gel method, and I have to admit they do look awfully good. If they lasted for 3 weeks that would be a very long time.
I honestly wouldnt even think about the UV rays, this is interesting!

I don’t have a dishwasher either so my nail polish usually gets a beaten and is chipped in a couple of days.I am shocked at the damage that can be done to our hands because of the UV lamp .

  • I do not get my nails done so I had no idea this was an issue. I wish all but especially teens that get their nails done would be told of this issue. Thank you for the new information

  • “We love our skin and how the skin on our hands tell our age so we should be especially careful to insure it’s “youthfulness.” Gel manicures are great but they DO use UVA radiation to dry the gel polish so protecting our skin from this is essential.

-Many of the nail professionals could not possibly read all the manufacturer’s instructions, thus they are not following these directions either putting the skin of their customers in danger. YVS understands this and how busy we all are. However, this is OUR business so we made it our business to be proficient in all we need to be regarding gel manis & pedis. YVS has read all of the instructions for each of these systems and we posted them on our website. We are also happy to answer any questions you or your nail professional might have pertaining to these instructions to insure the health of their nails and the health of their skin is adequately taken care of.
-following the right amount of time specifically given to “dry” or “cure” these polishes is super important. It is not “alright’ to “estimate” the length of time, nor is it “alright” to not use the lamp specifically manufactured by the company to dry their gel polish. Dr. Chris Adigun and YouVeeShield have taken the time to become experts in these systems. We are happy to share our research with your readers to insure they can experience this product as it was intended to be used. Making sure our skin is kept in “tip, top” shape, of course, is something we are devoted too as well. And we LOVE gel manicures and gel pedicures!
-Nail professionals are given so many different choices to share with their customers. (most of us really care if the polish is the same as the one Beyonce was wearing at the BET Awards… )Let YouVeeSheild and Dr. Adigun help with all the “other’ particularities. This will make this experience be a “win-win” or everyone then!
-Of all the systems available to the beauty professional today, these nail systems, gel manicures and gel pedicures are the most scientifically advanced. Following the directions is not optional. We already did all the “heavy lifting.” Let us share with you our research so you can spend your time doing what you really want to be doing…”

I never heard of gel manicures before reading this post. I don’t think I want to take the chance of being exposed to that much UV light even if I would would wear a YouVeeShield.

    • Thank you for your comment. I just thought I would remind you every time you go outside, you are exposed to UV light, as well. Hopefully, you take the necessary precautions to limit the damage it could do to your skin. That is all YouVeeShield is doing, essentially, is being the most effective way of protecting your skin during a manicure I love! (& pedicures too!)

    • Deborah, Thanks for your response. Every time you go outside you are being exposed to UVA radiation. In fact, these rays penetrate glass, so you don’t even have to go outside. What’s important to know is how to effectively block UVA radiation from our skin. When your are driving especially. Put on sunscreen 20 minutes before leaving the house. Make sure it has zinc oxide as it’s active ingredient. This is messy but it’s worth it because it works! As for the gels, they’re not for everyone, you’re right. But make sure any exposure to UVA radiation is limited or eliminated!

  • I use a protective gloves when exposing my hands to UV lamp. So far, I didn’t notice any changes on my skin. However, I like to test beauty products so I’ll probably try this shield.

  • Polish Perfect,
Damage from UVA radiation exposure does not always appear until many years later. But think about it, if you are in your 20’s now, let’s say, you might be in your 40’s when your hands look 80! UVA radiation causes premature aging of the skin. This is a fact. You will experience skin damage if you do not limit your exposure to UVA radiation. (& UVB, of course!) Send me an email & I will send you a photo of what happened to my hands. Thanks for your time.
