I have moved five times in the 7 years since I turned 18. I have never enjoyed the process of moving. However, I’ve learned a few tips and tricks that can make moving much easier.

A few ways to make moving easier:

1. Get free boxes from a local business. At least in my rural area most stores have a “truck day” where the semi’s come in and deliver new product. Call at least one week before your move to see when “truck day” is and if they will save boxes for you to keep. This way you can avoid paying for boxes.

2. Have a bunch of Sharpie style markers. Use them to write the room name on the box such as living room, bedroom, etc. I tried moving with just one or two markers lying around and they always got lost so having extras is a great idea.

3. Save newspapers for a few weeks in advance. This way you’ll have a way to wrap your glass or fragile items when packing.

4. Convince your friends to help. Having an extra person or two can make a huge difference especially when you’re faced with a task like cleaning out a loved one’s estate. Say “thank you” by buying a pizza for everyone to share once the day is over.

5. Get new furniture the affordable way, rent furniture for your new place. CORT Furniture Rental is the national industry leader. If you are going to be living somewhere short-term, furniture rental can save you a ton of work. I haven’t done a short-term move yet so I haven’t tried this personally. However, my dad is currently in a temporary apartment. He sold his old house, so he had to move out. However, his new place isn’t finished being built yet so he’s renting until it is finished. Using furniture rental allows you to have furniture on-demand. You can have it arrive when you need it, and picked up once you’re finished. There is less hassle! Let the furniture rental company deliver and pick up the furniture instead of having to find a way to haul furniture yourself.

A really cool benefit of using furniture rental is being able to match it with your home. If my dad were to purchase furniture for his current apartment, he would have to make sure it could fit within his small living room. Once his new home is built, he would want a different size and style of furniture to match that house. With CORT Furniture Rental you don’t have to feel bad or guilty when only using the furniture for a short period of time. Basically, you get to switch furniture each time you move without the guilt of getting rid of the pieces!

Have you ever used a furniture rental service?
