I’ve always wanted to be an awesome baker/cook and even contemplated culinary school. Over the years, I’ve pulled off some pretty neat things like the year I made a checkerboard birthday cake for our daughter. It was four layers high and turned out perfect! However, it was quite the feat and I have yet to try a second go at it. (Because as it is, just last year we had a birthday cake catastrophe when my layer cake literally split faster than an earthquake could have made it!) But over time, I do continue to try new things. Just recently, our 11 year old daughter was begging to try her hand at scone making. I had never eaten one much less made one but I told her to go for it. I don’t have much to base our thoughts on other than her batch turned out way better than mine! Airy, flaky, soft, and sweet, hers was everything I would imagine it should be whereas mine was lacking. So today, this post is a follow up to her success.
Hannah’s Scrumptious Scones
Ingredients:
- 2 cups unbleached white flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
- 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 5 Tablespoons cold (not frozen) butter
- 1 cup milk
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1/2 cup chocolate chips (**or another topping of your choice)
~Preheat the oven to 375 degrees
~Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
~Add the milk and lemon juice together, stir, and then place in the fridge for 10 minutes.
~Combine the flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, and soda in a large bowl.
~Cut in the butter by hand until a sandy looking mixture results.
~Add in your special ingredients of choice. We chose chocolate chips and then also topped half of our batch with cinnamon sugar once on the pan.
~Add the milk/lemon juice mixture and stir until moistened. DO NOT OVER-MIX! (I’m pretty sure this is where I went wrong.)
~Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and mold into a long tube/snake shape about 12 inches long.
~Cut 1 inch wedges and place on parchment paper lined cookie sheet.
~Bake for about 15 minutes or till golden brown.
~Enjoy!
This was truly a simple recipe that we adapted from a tea party book of hers and, even though we worked side by side, our 11 year old made her very own batch. So whether you’re looking for a nice recipe to spend time in the kitchen with a daughter or granddaughter or looking for a treat to bring to a coffee date, this recipe was perfect for beginners but delicious enough for everyone!
I’m a city girl turned country by my awesome husband and we have three busy boys and two darling daughters. I love spending time with my family, reading Karen Kingsbury novels, and catching up with friends while our kiddos have play dates. I’m blessed beyond measure and can’t wait to see what God has in store.

Thank you for the recipe. I want to let my granddaughter make these. She always helps me cook and I let her do as much as I feel comfortable with. She has no fear in cooking. She will try to make anything.

I buy chocolate chip scones sometimes from a bakery. I always thought they would be dry but they are really moist and heavy. This recipe looks doable and not too complicated.

I always thought I would have done well at Culinary Institute, yet these days, I tend to just make the same things over and over again. Well, my daughter and I have decided to keep trying new recipes on Pinterest instead of making the same things over and over. I have pinned this to give it a try (eventually – so many recipes, so little time) LOL Looks delicious, thought, so probably sooner rather than later!

WOW!!! This does sound easy! I’ve never even thought of making scones because of how intimidating they sound… how stupid of me!!! I’d love some of these with a nice cup of hot tea on a Sunday afternoon when everyone is gone!!!! Yeah right!!! I will be making these tho!!!

I’ve never made scones before but they sound really good. I’m partially paralyzed now but I’m really looking forward to learning to adjusting so I can cook and clean, etc. I’m going to bookmark this for when I go home.

Scones are a favorite breakfast goodie of mine. I will have to try this recipe using currants.
It’s lovely to have someone learn so well that she beats you at your own game!
