I’ve always wanted to be an awesome baker/cook and even contemplated culinary school.  Over the years, I’ve pulled off some pretty neat things like the year I made a checkerboard birthday cake for our daughter.  It was four layers high and turned out perfect!  However, it was quite the feat and I have yet to try a second go at it.   (Because as it is, just last year we had a birthday cake catastrophe when my layer cake literally split faster than an earthquake could have made it!)   But over time, I do continue to try new things.  Just recently, our 11 year old daughter was begging to try her hand at scone making.  I had never eaten one much less made one but I told her to go for it.  I don’t have much to base our thoughts on other than her batch turned out way better than mine!  Airy, flaky, soft, and sweet, hers was everything I would imagine it should be whereas mine was lacking.  So today, this post is a follow up to her success.

Hannah’s Scrumptious Scones

Hannah's Easy & Scrumptious Scones Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups unbleached white flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 5 Tablespoons cold (not frozen) butter
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips (**or another topping of your choice)

~Preheat the oven to 375 degrees

~Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.

~Add the milk and lemon juice together, stir, and then place in the fridge for 10 minutes.

~Combine the flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, and soda in a large bowl.

~Cut in the butter by hand until a sandy looking mixture results.

~Add in your special ingredients of choice.  We chose chocolate chips and then also topped half of our batch with cinnamon sugar once on the pan.

~Add the milk/lemon juice mixture and stir until moistened.  DO NOT OVER-MIX!  (I’m pretty sure this is where I went wrong.)

~Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and mold into a long tube/snake shape about 12 inches long.

~Cut 1 inch wedges and place on parchment paper lined cookie sheet.

~Bake for about 15 minutes or till golden brown.

~Enjoy!

This was truly a simple recipe that we adapted from a tea party book of hers and, even though we worked side by side, our 11 year old made her very own batch.  So whether you’re looking for a nice recipe to spend time in the kitchen with a daughter or granddaughter or looking for a treat to bring to a coffee date, this recipe was perfect for beginners but delicious enough for everyone!
