Gifted movie

One of my favorite TV shows as a kid featured a child-genius as the main character. I liked it so much that anytime I catch word of shows or movies with a similar theme they catch my ear.

Gifted is a movie that will be in theaters tomorrow, April 7th. The cast features Chris Evans, McKenna Grace, Lindsay Duncan, Jenny Slate, and Octavia Spencer. In the movie, Frank Adler (acted by Chris Evans) is raising his niece Mary (acted by Mckenna Grace) who is a child prodigy. It takes place in Florida, and Mary is 7 years old. Frank plans to raise her with a normal school life, but those plans change when Frank’s mother Evelyn catches on to Mary’s incredibly mathematical abilities. Evelyn has entirely different plans for Mary, which would require the separation of Frank and Mary.

The theme is interesting on several fronts. The concept of trying to raise a child in a way that would best serve her parent (who has passed) is a heavy responsibility. Trying to raise a gifted child who doesn’t quite fit in at a traditional school setting is yet another. Do you prioritize maximizing her learning while she’s young, or giving her a traditional childhood that she will look back on warmly? Is there some way to do both? It’s also just interesting to recognize how being highly gifted can really complicate things. I think it’s common for parents to dream of their child being naturally intelligent so that they will have an easier time in school, in college and in their career. Yet at some point, it can be problematic if it interferes with their social life or other areas of life.

I look forward to seeing Gifted to see how they resolve all of these interesting conflicts. Check out the video below for the trailer.

I hadn’t saw or read what this movie was about – boy, does it sound good. Our daughter is really bright – not this kind of level but I can relate to wanting a smart kid and the struggles they have fitting in.

This sounds like a good movie. It would be a tough decision either way. Another aspect is breaking the only family bond she has. Kids this age no matter how bright dont have the majority to choose something so important and it is up to adults thinking clearly to make the right choice.
